What is the MATTER with people!!??
What are they abandoning mincemeat pie for?
Southerners insisting pecan pie’s to die for!
Westerners with deranged ideas of eatin’
Blueberry bibbers, and chocolate cream cretins!
Another thanksgiving and I am un-minced!
I see all the pies -apple, pumpkin, and berry,
I drink cider and wine, served to make me feel merry,
but I study the menu, and once again wince,
where o where is my much maligned mince??
‘No person of breeding dislikes mincemeat pie!’
I say with a hot stubborn tear in my eye,
and ‘Mince is for princes!’ I haughtily assert,
but alas, this year too, it won’t be dessert

@jjorge,
saad, sad. Mincemeat seems to be a generational thing. Our kids hated it till they grew up, now its a comfort dessert (especially warmed and served wif vanilla Ice cream.
@farmerman,
I'm going to try making my own -as soon as I can find some of the (store bought) filling.
@jjorge,
well, so as not to lose the poesy of your homage to a good mincemeat pie, Weve always used the BOX packages of NONESUCH Mincemeat. The jarred stuff makes a very sloppy pie. My wife will take 2 boxes and add another package of citron and strips of home pickled tangerine. and one or two others that even involve other fruits
I hears me this cry
about mincemeat pie
It seems such a crime
that pie so sublime
is now hard to find
'tis truly unkind.
@ehBeth,
Here is the song -the DELIGHTFUL song- supplied by ehBeth:
'Mincemeat Tart' performed by noted Canadian folk singer Roy Forbes.
(Song starts at the 2 minute mark)

Is that an ironic name? Or is it genuinely moosemeat? If so? Gamey? Chewey? Gristly and fatty?
@tsarstepan,
moosemeat tastes like a more flavorful cut of wombat
My grandfather loved Mincemeat Pie......it makes my teeth ache. I've never been comfortable with achingly sweet stuff.
@glitterbag,
the mincemeat Im used to has a tangy citrus and fruit flavor with pices and then sweetness. Our recipe isnt as cloying as something like pecan pr shoo -fly pies
@farmerman,
That's the way I like it -not too sweet.
This came up on the photo association thread, and I'm not surprised. This is your mincemeat pie.
These are our mince pies.
I know what I find more appetising.
I top mine with Viennese shortbread, they don't stick around for long.
@izzythepush,
theres no "better mincemeat treat", theres only good or bad. Ive tried the English versions at a bakery in St Stephen New Brunswick Canadia,
Its nice, with a more shortbtready flavor of the dough ,I like that. AMerican style is usually a big hunk a pie so that its served with a great glop of vanilla ice cream. Thats why US folks are getting broad of beam
Now, tell me bout STICKY TOFFEE PUDDING. I cant find that anywhere in the US. Thats my favorite dessert of ALL TIME , especially with a very lightly sweetened whip cream (or clotted cream-which, by its name, will turn more people OFF than make them want to try it)
@izzythepush,
PS, most real American style mincemeat pies DONT have lattice tops. Thats for fruit pies that caramelize like Rhubarb or strawberry or blackberry.
Real US mincemeat has a heavy crust usually with cookie cutter doodads on the top and sugar thats hit with a flame thrower to recrystallize and brown (I guess that would be a form of caramelizing too)
@farmerman,
You still haven't told them about stalking the wild mince?
@roger,
Mints, its the wild Mints.
@farmerman,
Most abundant near Minsk.
