RIP PS2

I got the PS2 probably within a month or two of its release. Started having problems about a year or two ago with Disc Read Errors, but it was only with DVD's, never with games.

Lately, I had been forced to start and restart and eject and reeject in order to avoid the error, but basically I could always get it to run, eventually.

Yesterday marked the second consecutive day opon which my game would start, but then would freeze upon loading the actual game (talking baseball here).

Hop on the ol' internet and Google "PS2 disk read errors" and find it's a pretty simple fix: you just pop the thing open and mess with the laser's height by adjusting an internal gear.

Simple enough. But the lid to the playstation is always connected to the base of the unit, because the power and eject buttons are on the lid. The two pieces are thus connected by a flimsy little ribbon.

Long story short, the lid fell on the ground and the ribbon broke. In my efforts to fix the problem I (of course) just broke the thing worse.

I am now in the market for a new playstation.

If you can't see the link...

Some company is suing Sony for patent infringement. They claim the vibrating controllers violates their patent.

They won the first round in court. Of course Sony is appealing the ruling.

Sometimes you gotta learn things the hard way. My PS2 is also a first run model (got it the first holiday it came out), and only now am I starting to have some problems (mainly just with GTA:SA). I'm still debating opening the thing up, at least to compress air out the dust it must be caked with inside.

Anyway, just go to Ebay. You can get a system between 60-100 bucks now.

This forum is old news, but I was in the same situation as you -- including the purchase date. I had nothing but a Q-tip, an eye glass screwdriver, and some moxie and took the thing apart and cleaned it. It worked great. (It's safe to say my heart rate doubled when I carefully kept myself away from that ribbon that's so easily trashed.) They also call for some rubbing alcohol but i didn't use it. I've done this twice and the PS2 has sparked right back up. I assume that I'll need the rubbing alcohol next time just to keep the dust from being attracted to the laser, because maybe I left some sort of static charge in there or something.

Anyway, yeah. Just buy a new one.

Patent Infringement? Wow.... Sony's a huge company though... they can cover the loss if they lose, thought it certainly might cut back alot on development of the PS3. What's the news on the appeal, anyone know?

no...don't know...this is intense.
The article's pretty old, it talks about 'this weekend's release of PSP,' which has been out for a few months now.
