Of course there are other suitable suburbs close to the university. (see the Melbourne Uni link)

You could walk there from Parkville & some parts of Nth Melbourne. But cost & the size of your yard (for animals) could be a problem.

Northcote, Westgarth & Thornbury could well be OK, too, but again, costs for similar properties could be considerably more expensive than Brunswick/Coburg.

You may want to investigate Fiztroy/Collingwood. Very urban/trendy environments, but costly & yard space for animals could proove to be a problem.

Feel free to ask further questions as they emerge, OK? Smile

Thanks Mr S - I didn't realise that our little billabong warranted a thread, still I suppose it was in response to a question

Firstly may I congratulate everyone on not reverting to the tired City of Churches stereotype. We still have some but a lot have been turned into nightclubs, good to see the Able2Know folks are up to speed.

And of course the beer. One thing I simply cannot understand about my town is how the heck can we have both the worst beer in Australia -West End/Southwark - shiver - and the best, which of course is anything produced by Coopers.

And on that, it's a boring place yet we have some of the most wicked murders and crimes in Australia's history. I hate that reputation. NSW has Milat but we apparently have a whole range of homicidal nutters. I mean which other city in Australia could produce and nurture The Family? Salman Rushdie was right about Adelaide, it has a deep weirdness.

Traffic - we wouldn't know a good traffic jam if we saw one yet we have the worst and most impatient drivers in Australia.

Perhaps we should be re-named the City of Paradoxes.

Anyway this thread is really about Melbourne, a charming and graceful city that puts me in mind of a cross between London and Paris. I don't see how it manages this - perhaps Melbourne is a little transgender given that Jack Kerouac once described Paris as a woman but London as a man in a pub with a pipe. Perhaps Melbourne changes gender from day to night. I'm not sure but I do know it's interesting and like its weather, changeable.

Of course I enjoy Sydney too, a great city, a fun city, wouldn't want to live there unless I were very wealthy but what a city.

But if Kerouac described London as a reliable, if stodgy man and Paris as a woman and I've ascribed some sort of transgender nature to Melbourne how are we to portray Sydney?

It's easy really. She's a woman too but unlike Paris with her mix of sophisticated everyday woman and alluring lady of the night, Sydney is a good-time girl, a flashy tart that's had just a little too much to drink and in the morning after the good time is over certainly shows her wear and tear, but you know, we all love her, all of us, in fact we stand in line waiting our chance to love her once more.

Brunswick & Coburg
Hi msolga,

Thanks for the info. I'm kinda checking possibilities as well.

I heard crime is an issue in both Brunswick and Coburg, and that's the main reason of their affordability. Any grounds for that?..

Shocked

Jeez I'm offline for 5 minutes that outrageous Stillwater person runs haywire in the worst possible way through this thread! I should have realised last night after the first couple of attacks ..... He was just waiting, waiting, waiting for me to leave, so's he could run amok! You'll keep, Stilly, you'll keep! I will remember this! Evil or Very Mad

Mr goodfielder, thank you! You are a true gentleman. God knows what else Mr Stillwater would have gotten up to here if not for your moderating influence! I will remember this & shout you a Coopers (great beer!) one day.

And where is cleedon6, hmmmm? Probably decided to give Oz a miss, because we all seem mad!

Hello, Galilite. Very Happy

I don't think I've met you before?

Crime an issue? Hmmm, do you mean car theft, housebreak-ins, etc? I guess it is, but probably not more so than say, Northcote, or Richmond, or .... Or perhaps you are referring to a couple of "gangland" events last year? (another story, very interesting BTW!) ... There was a shooting in a Brunswick pub (gang warfare payback) & in another incident a body was dumped in a Brunswick street. But hey, these crims weren't locals & they didn't kill locals. Too bad they didn't do this stuff in their own backyard is all I can say! Evil or Very Mad There were also "events" of a similar nature in Essendon, in a Carlton cafe & Sth Yarra & other places These guys move around!

Anyway, I'm not certain of what you mean - could you please elaborate?

Thanks again! Yes, you got me right. Just wanted a little background to sort out "bad" neighbourhoods (Vic police website only contains stubs but no statistics). I'm not very demanding though :-) .

What's with the "gangland" events last year you mentioned?

There is an ongoing "war" between 2 different groups of criminal thugs to see which controls crime in this city. They're known as the "old" brigade who used to control things & the "new" brigade who aspire to be the bosses. They have shot each other down in a variety of different locations, to the astonishment of ordinary folk just going about their day-to-day business. No "civilians" have been harmed in these encounters. We watch on as they systematically destroy each other or get thrown into jail. Weird. It doesn't really touch your lives. You read about it in the newspapers & think they're quite mad. Rolling Eyes

msloga- thanks for all of the neighborhood info. The areas that seem to be most appealing (after searching a bit)... Brunswick, N. Carlton, N. Melbourne, Colinwood, and maybe Northcote.

thanks again for all of the help... the details have been very useful. we should be able to make a go-no-go decision very soon about our "potential" move to melbourne.

Cheers!
