An interesting question has occured to me

Would a fake website be able to tell if you put a wrong password in?

Prolly not. On the other hand, it wouldn't be surprisin' if the fake bankin' site loaded spyware - such as perhaps a key-logger with a call-home function - onto your machine while you were visitin' it -'specially if you took any action on the site - like clickin' anything.
