Ya pretty much gotta figure out what belongs in Windows, how and why it works, and what doesn't belong there, and understand how and why that works too. Essentially the stuff that doesn't belong there works precisely because of the way Windows works. Knowin' that sorta stuff is pretty handy whether you wanna create, prevent, or remove yuckware.

There are lotsa forums, usenet groups, and websites out there that can help ya learn. A place to start would be Alliance of Security Analysis Professionals, and there are plenty of relevant other organizations and associations out there too.

If you have a specific problem with your own computer, and you'd like someone here to help you sort it out, see This Topic, get through all the preliminaries, post a log to this thread, and we'll see what we can do for ya.

Anyone lookin' for yuckware removal tools is well advised to consult

Spyware Warrior's Rogue/Suspect Anti-Spyware List.

Most - not all, but far and away most - anti-spyware/anti-adware apps that require payment are scams, and often install bundled yuckware of their own. Reputable, reliable pay-for-use anti-yuckware products exist, however they are far outnumbered by the bogus ones.

A hallmark of these scams is the "Download now and scan for free" come-on. If you do click for the "free scan" the downloaded app will invariably report it has "detected" yuckware, which it will remove only if you register and pay for what it typically will call the "full" or "Deluxe" version. Most "detections" will be either "false positives" - legitimate apps or files wrongly identified as yuckware - or wholly spurious, actually non-existant on your machine. Meanwhile, in many, many instances, the "free scan" has installed its own yuckware on your machine.

Before downloadin' anything related to computer performance, security or privacy, check it out carefully, and before actually payin' for anything, check it out real, real well. Look for independent reviews and actual user-comments, don't rely on the application's own website. Also, many, if not most, "paid search results" for anti-yuckware products that turn up on any search engine will be for products of questionable-at-best nature. Tryin' to find or solve yuckware problems with these scams is like tryin' to chase a dog away by throwin' steaks and chops at it.
