Someone please help! My friend has a dell computer. He originally had windows 98 or 2000 installed on his computer, and he updated it to windows xp. Now when he goes to reformat it, and he gets some sort of error that says it cannot be reformatted from a newer windows to an older windows edition. What do we do?

It is unclear from your post what you are trying to do.

Are you actually reformatting the hard drive or do you just want to put a different version of windows on the computer while keeping other files on the hard drive? What version of windows are you trying to put on the drive?

Darik's Boot and Nuke oughtta do that just fine. Be sure its what you want to do, though; its a one-way ticket.
