@Setanta,
Then get ready to be jealous. I’m in Central Mexico right now and the avocados here are cheap, plentiful and more flavorful that anything you could get North of the border. They taste like they are right off the tree, because they are

A Mexican amiga asked me “what is it with you gringos and avocados?”
The locals eat them, but only as a small accompaniment as guacamole with breakfast, like a tablespoon or two, or some on the side with tacos.

@chai2,
Does the avocado oil impart any avocado flavor?

@Setanta,
That must be it, it's not like you can't tell a joke or anything. Otherwise you wouldn't known as Chuckles.

@glitterbag,
The problem I find with threads like this is that I'm really slapdash in the kitchen. I'll just see what I've got and give it a go. Usually works out OK, but if it's particularly good there's no guarantee I'll remember it.

Plus our brands and blends are completely different, so we'd have to limit ourselves to individual spices/recipes. At the moment I've been using a lot of this.

It's from Hull, where admittedly it is very popular, but I don't think it's regarded as a classic anywhere else.

Having said that it's very good with wedgies.

@izzythepush,
I had to read the label 4 times before I realized you were talking about potato wedges. (Pheweeeee)

My kitchen routine is similar, I keep dozens of spices so whenever the mood strikes I have it on hand. The only downside is that they need to be replaced before they are used up....there is no point in using spice if you can’t taste them, gotta keep them fresh as possible.

@glitterbag,
I just spotted it as well. They're wedges here too. It must be all that talk about pants.

No. It’s very mild and doesn’t clash with anything you are making. It’s chock full of very healthy fats.

I just tasted some from the bottle, and no distinctive taste.

@Setanta,
I'd be surprised if canola oil isn't available in the US.

oh yeah spices

a big reason to love the Bulk Barn here. you can buy as much or as little of any spice. brilliant. want one clove - buy one clove. their stuff is wonderfully fresh and much less expensive than buying spices(/candies/anything they carry) in a grocery store

I am hoarding my last Paul Prudhomme spice blends. Not as fresh as they once were but the packaging makes me smile. Had some on taters fried in duck fat earlier. It was tasty and mmm tasty Smile

@ehBeth,
Really? Grilling always seemed like such a pain in the ass to me. I could never figure out the big attraction.

I’m not outdoorsy though, and don’t like the element of danger. That’s why I figured men like doing it. Open flame.

@ehBeth,
Yes re bulk spices. I’ve had things weigh up for literally 3 or 4 cents, and it was still more than I needed.

@ehBeth,
Canola ain't not rape seed oil. Canola--which means Canadian oil--was created by cross-breeding rape seed with something (I disremember what) because of a mistaken belief that a component of rape seed oil is toxic. So there . . . you girl.

If I remember correctly, rape seed oil is used more in Eastern Europe.....
Without checking the Agricultural Stats, if I remember correctly 'rape' a root crop was a staple in farming in Romania, Poland and Hungary. (maybe Bulgaria, I don't remember ever checking) However, perhaps the oil is exported to other countries.

If I am remembering incorrectly, someone will surely correct me.

@glitterbag,
It's used a lot over here. Very distinctive fields.

Lord Ellpus recommended it over olive oil because while olive oil has Omega 3, 6 and 9 oils, rape seed oil has those oils, and vitamin E and a higher smoke point than olive oil.

@Setanta,
I always use olive oil when I cook.

As for salt, our family physician calls it “The silent killer” .

@jcboy,
I prefer olive oil as well, I love the fragrance. However, I need a tiny bit of salt....I.can't eat overly salty foods because I find it unpalatable, but a little here and there makes me happy.
