I just got an ipod, but my computer (HP pavilion laptop with Windows xp, service pack 2) did not have any USB 2.0 ports. So I went and bought a certified usb 2.0 notebook card (dynex). I installed the drivers and my device manager shows a Standard enhanced PCI to USB Host controller when the card is inserted into the slot.
The problem is whenever I plug in my iPod to the usb 2.0 slot, the computer freezes after about 10 seconds. I tried plugging my mouse into the 2.0 slot and it worked fine.
Any ideas on what the problem might be or how to fix it are appreciated.
Thanks.
Dunno as this'll work, but I'd try uninstallin' all the iPod software from the laptop, re-bootin' (with the USB 2.0 card mounted), and then connectin' the iPod via the adapter card and reinstallin' software when prompted.
One thing that catches my eye there, though - when you look in Device Manager, you oughtta see both your labtop's own native OEM USB "Standard" (or sometimes branded or even "Generic") host and conroller, as always, and the new USB 2.0 Host and controller. I don't have an HP layin' around, or any familiarity with the Dynex product you mention, but I have a Belkin USB 2.0 PCMCIA cardslot adapter; I just checked, and it definitely shows up as an additional, distinct USB resource - "USB 2.0 High Speed Host Controller" and "USB 2.0 Root Hub Device" over and above the native OEM "USB Open Host Controller" and "USB Root Hub"- when its in place, whether the operatin' system of the machine its in is Win 98 (a Winbook), Win ME (a Compaq), Win 2K (a Toshiba), or Win XP (both a Dell w/XP Pro and a Sony w/XP Home), specifically listed, in all instances, as "USB 2.0". On the Dell XP machine, which has native OEM USB 2.0, it shows up as a second specifically designated "USB 2.0" resource.
