Hate to be a downer but the IT market in Oz has seriously plateaued. Lots of graduates out there not getting jobs. Doesn't look like it's going to improve anytime soon either because there are still too many people enrolling. The private colleges are the main culprits, they'll teach anyone who can pay and then "guarantee" them employment. The employment usually ends up being short term under poor conditions.

Also hairdressers, medical practitioners of many kinds and recently accountants.

Full list of occupations in demand (so called "Migration Occupations in Demand List" or MODL):
http://www.immi.gov.au/migration/skilled/modl.htm
Although it reflects the state of the market with certain delay, occupations in this list gain additional points when following the skilled migration path.

I am not a true blue Aussie, but I was recently granted an Australian permanent resident visa after long and annoying struggle with migration authorities. I will post more on the subject. I've collected a few useful links and will publish them in the next posts.

The entire collection sits here:
http://www.ozzi.ru/forum/viewtopic.php?p=6776
It's a Russian speaking Aussie community. As the original poster is from Estonia, the chances are s/he reads Russian.

Moving to Oz: migration-related online communities
Previous posters have already published a link to the website of the Australian migration authority. I'll just put here a fast link to their migration FAQ:
http://www.immi.gov.au/faq/migrate/index.htm

Also:

British Expats
http://britishexpats.com/forum
The largest expat community. This part is dedicated to life in Australia:
http://britishexpats.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=54
And this is their Useful Links.
Migration - procedural stuff forum.

There's also a possibility to connect via Usenet:
nntp://misc.immigration.australia+nz
(you don't want to click it if you never used it before Wink )

Go Matilda
http://www.gomatilda.com
Migration, businesses for sale, rent, etc. Again, more Brit-oriented.
http://www.gomatildaforums.com
These are their forums - migration stuff and regional communities - Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide and others. Registration needed for the regional community forums. These are slightly less than British Expats but still very informative.

ASA Group
http://www.australia-migration.com
Another migration related website also containing base info on life in Australia.
http://forums.australia-migration.com
Another migration forum, very large and nicely divided into subjects. The community is less monocultural than in British Expats.

AusTimeline.com
http://www.AusTimeline.com
Tracking applications. This is NOT an official website. People post their data of their own free will. Believe me, very helpful while waiting for the outcome.

Moving to Oz: real estate
Real estate. To get an idea about prices, quality, etc.

2 largest ones:
http://www.domain.com.au
http://www.realestate.com.au
Detailed descriptions, photos.

This one is not bad either:
http://www.realestateview.com.au
It's smaller but quicker and still comprehensive. There is a nice option of Quick List.

Share accommodation search engines (there's a chance I'm going to explore this one...):

Flatmate
http://www.flatmate.com.au
A small search engine. Its most valuable part - FAQ about share accommodation, how to, what to do, what not to do, etc.:
http://www.flatmate.com.au/faq.html
Quick classifieds list:
http://www.flatmate.com.au/Classifiedlist.html

Flatmate Finders
http://www.flatmatefinders.com.au
Sydney / Melbourne search engine. Great prices.

http://www.2share.com.au
Not a bad engine.

Accom2share
http://www.accom2share.com.au
A very weird engine, but maybe I'm missing the point Wink .

Any permanent visa.

If you have no relatives in Australia and you're not a millionaire or top executive, then your only path is General Skilled Migration.
Switch-Twitch wrote:

Any permanent visa.

And it has nothing to do with chances. Once you have the permanent resident status, you can get it after two years.

Anyway, I suggest that you go to British Expats or GoMatilda or DIMIA's site. That's what they focus on.

Well, it was 2.5 years ago, mon, look at the date...

Anyways, British Expats still works, and the agents on ASA were kind of nasty so why not try your luck there. I'm afraid I am no longer a pro on this stuff as the #$%^& laws has changed numerous times since then, and I am seriously busy with other things (running my business, that is).

Sorry I couldn't be of much help.
