Win xp: login screen disappeared?

When I turned on my computer (a different one), my login screen disappeared. I tried to go into safe mode with my admin account to see if there's anything wrong, but even in safe mode, there was no login screen. Anybody knows what's wrong? (or how I can go in?)

Can you actually enter safemode or will Windows not start at all?

Some machines are set to automatically log onto a default account.
If it's part of a big network and there is a screen that says something like "you agree to abide by the company IT rules..." etc... with a OK button then click the OK button but have the shift key held down when you do.
The box where you type in your username and password will come back then.
