When Lawrence of Arabia was released in 1962 what was it's effect on the audience? What did most people think about the film, did they like it?
Welcome to A2K, nelly. That's a rhetorical question but the film did open to critical acclaim and did well at the box office although it isn't one of the 100 top grossing film list. There is no record of the audience previews that I can find on professional sites which could answer your question. It's even difficult other than box office what audiences think about today's movies other than
www.imdb.com which has user ratings. There you will find "Lawrence of Arabia" in the search and some present day user reviews. Incidentally, "Dr. Zhivago" is high up on the best films of all times on the IMDb user ratings and "Lawrence" is somewhere way down on the list. Curious, since "Lawrence" is a vastly superior film to "Zhivago."
Also curious is that some believe the overt references to homosexuality in "Alexander" could have been part of the reason it did poor box office while the references to Lawrence's homosexuality has rarely been mentioned.
I don't speak for others, but I fell asleep in the theater while watching both Zhivago and Lawrence. I thought they were beautifully filmed from what I saw then and in succeeding years, but never did or will care for either one.
I fist saw it 2 days ago. I couldn't enjoy it more!
What type of the figure to you think Lawrence was? I prefer tragedic to heroic.
Young man, with passion, craving for spiritual freedom, was finally demolished by everyone around him, Prince fiesal, British general, and his beloved "Arab" and its people, and ironically with crowds of people who only regarded him as a "hero", whomyou can take a picture or get a autograph with.
