Sorry Gravy, but I cant really help as I live in the UK and we have different laws/ regs regarding pensions.

General advice would be to look at the top ten pension providers in the U.S., and check their performance records over the past ten tears or so.
Read as much literature as possible regarding the different types of pensions out there, so that you understand how these different types of investments work, and their advantages and pitfalls. i.e. a pension that only invests in the stockmarket is putting all of your eggs in one basket, and if there is a crash just before you retire, you could face a shortfall in expected income.
It all depends on your present age, the amount you can afford to pay each month, and the age at which you plan to retire.
A rule of thumb is that for every five years that a pension is delayed from the base line of a twenty year old, the "base line" premium will have to be increased by 50% to obtain the same pension at the end.
Example:-
20 years old = $100 p.month to get "x" pension at 65
25 " " = $150 " " same amount at 65
30 " " = $200 " " " "
35 " " = $250 etc etc
( After 35 the increase "curve" gets even steeper)
So, if there are any 20 year olds out there.......start your pensions now, because it will save the pain that you will have to endure if you delay.

Look at it like a tooth cavity.....get it done at the start.....no problem.
Put it off, delay, hope it will go away, then get it done....bloody painful.
THATS CHEERED YOU ALL UP! (sorry)

I learn lots of new things every day but increasingly they turn out to be things that;

a) I should have known
or
b) things I already knew but forgot

Sad

"Learned" today that South Pole trek-types end up having to retrain their sights as they lose ability to focus on things not very far away and not very close.

I am still trying to verify...
