I am experiencing extremely long reformat times on a 120 GB Maxtor drive as an NTFS drive. It had a single 117 Mb FAT 32 partition containing a recovery version of XP Home (from my VPR MATRIX recovery cd's).
I'm installing an Upgrade XP Pro CD, and Microsoft support suggested that I choose the option to reformat to NTFS (not the quick format, and not the conversion). It took about 4 hours for the first 10 percent, yet Microsoft support insists this is normal.
It's now been 14 hours, and it's at 35% complete. Can this possibly be "normal"? Any suggestions on what to do next?
that does indeed seem to be taking a long time! Ive never done a full format myself, ive always opted for the quick format. I have no idea what the difference is between the two, however if I was you I would be tempted to just go for the quick format. Try that first, if you have problems then you might have no option but to go for the long option and just let it run its course.
Alternatively try a 3rd party disk formatting application such as Norton Partition Magic.
MS Support Says DOn't Use Quick Format
The Microsoft support analyst that I worked with said to use the regular format utility, not the quick format. Well, I've made it to 58% and it's still just 3:00 pm Sunday EST.
It can take quite a while to reformat a large drive to NTFS. If its proceeding, I'd say just be patient.
Of course, there's always that fun way Windows has of gettin' 96% done with somethin' then tellin' ya it can't complete the operation. I always find that entertaininin'.
i love that as well....... always do the quick reformat....lol no point in waiting 2 days for 10 mb of extra space
