Sorting alphanumerically in Excel

So, I've got this list that I want to sort into alphanumeric order. Excel doesn't seem to want to do it the way I need it.

Say I have this list;

711
2
10035
20778

At the moment Excel will sort that as;

2
711
10035
20778

What I want is;

10035
2
20778
711

The actual list has about 10,000 lines and there are letters mixed in as well.

I am assuming I need to format the cells in a certain way but I am not having much luck. Anybody know what I need to do?

Hi Adrian

I don't have Excel right now (star office is cheaper) but I'm pretty sure if you format the cells as text then it will sort them the way you want ie

1
10
11
12
..
19
100

Let me know if it doesn't work - I pick up my new pc with Office XP this arvo!
