I think we don't know that that is what happened. Other reports say they were not at a checkpoint, that they were 700 meters from the airport and had already cleared all checkpoints, and that the intelligence officer they knew they were coming.
As to her being anti-American, I know that. But it doesn't change the fact that with all of our superior military technology (I assume that includes a pair of binoculars and a walkie talkie) we managed to fire on a car carrying Italian intelligence officers and a freed hostage. It's possible it was an accident, but it seems unlikely to me.
