I was wondering what the age you have to be before you can smoke in australia actually is. I know you have to be 18 to buy tobacco products but i was told that your parents/guardian can legally buy tobacco products for you and you are allowed to smoke when your 16 is this true?
Each State and Territory decides this. Various pieces of legislation in the different jurisdictions control it but try to use key words in a search such as "tobacc" and "age". A good resource is
http://www.austlii.edu.au it contains all relevant legislation.
thank you i will look there and see what i can find i live in NSW btw
No worries if you get stuck let me know, austlii has so much information that it can be somewhat overwhelming first time there.
Hi all you aussies!!!
Sydneyperson2005 - you might also want to check up on the new law about non smoking in places around children playgrounds and sporting arenas.
austlii is defintiely a good place to research. If you want legislative info in Queensland, I recommend
