What is the actual purpose of a wedding reception, party etc, the whole money sucking tradition?

The ceremony is when you actually get married. The reception is for you to throw a party for your friends and family who love you and want to wish you well (and are giving you gifts).

If you don't want to have a reception, then elope. No biggie.
