@Sturgis,
Can’t follow the logic.

I get the utter weirdness of some idiots thinking they can force other people to do their bidding.

It just boggles my mind that they think they have any rights over others sitting or standing.

@Sturgis,
When I was a small child, I refused to stand for a week because I felt weird repeating a mantra with other people with my hand over my heart. I still think it’s weird.

I’m standing now because I don’t want to be fired for not standing.
These seem like reasonable choices to me.

Based on my slogans and posters, my bias centers around the power of education, reading, and freedom.

I implied something made me cringe because it made me cringe.

100% of the students receive free or reduced lunch and breakfast. It is the poorest school in a very large district.

@Lash,
You need to stick with your convictions. If standing goes against what you believe, then don't do it. If termination from the job occurs, you have recourse as your civil liberties will have been violated through unlawful ending of employment.

In the words of the poem by John Greenleaf Whittier, Barbara Frietchie, "shoot, if you must, this old gray head,
But spare your country's flag," she said.

As sung by singer Aaron Tippin, You've Got To Stand For Something, (Or You'll Fall For Anything)

@Sturgis,
My convictions about the flag aren’t strong enough to spend the last few years my life unemployable. I can’t afford a lawyer, and I don’t have the energy to follow this up. I don’t mind standing or I wouldn’t do it.

I just don’t want to police kids who don’t want to stand.

@Lash,
As Tom Petty said, "I Won't back down."

The only backing down visible is when I stop replying to a person's statements and whatever rhetoric they are spewing. I state my case, sometimes twice or more and depart. However, at no time have i submitted to the wishes of another (well, since I was about 16 or 17 and still living under someone else's rules)

Then again, we're all different.

Just give the youngsters a good and proper education, that's most important here.

Jebus cripes, today was a day.

The unit topic is Social Injustice.

Ms Loveface <—- that’s me— introduced every social injustice I could think of for Honors’ exposition topics. Students googled them, asked a few clarifying questions—-and the room got quiet.

I can’t wait to hear their presentations.

Male student, to me in class, in front of his cronies: I’ve been trying to understand this for two years, and this is the first time it made any sense to me. Thanks for explaining it.

I had an observation later that day that was a train wreck, but I couldn’t stop smiling about what that kid said.

It kept me suiting up for battle for the next three days. ☺️

Btw—interesting turn of events re standing/sitting for the pledge. I used NFL anthem controversy as a writing prompt, and we had rich debate around it.

So, no one was standing for our pledge previous—yesterday five guys stood up and appealed to others to stand.

I’m enjoying witnessing their reactions to what we read and talk about.

It is a rare gift to have a part in their development as thinking people.

I’m riding high.

A few students have asked to be transferred to my class.

It’s a little political, so I’m not sure what I should do, but I have to say, it feels good.

Launching a unit re dystopia.

I’m planning to jazz these guys with a kick ass scene from five or six of the most compelling scenes in the most interesting dystopian films.

If this was your job—if you love dystopia—what are the most riveting exciting or creepy scenes in what you consider the most compelling dystopian movies?

Films I’m considering, though I can’t decide which scenes.
Fahrenheit 451–although I think I might mix in actual book burnings for good measure
Children of Men
V for Vendetta
Mad Max (WHICH ONE??!?!?). Fury Road is cool, but I’m so damn partial to II.
The Matrix
Blade Runner
A Clockwork Orange, though I’m not sure I can find 2 minute excerpt clean enough for my kids.
Snowpiercer

Any scenes from these OR OTHERS will be appreciated!!

@Lash,
1984. The scene in which Winston's television shows Big Brother talking directly to him.

@Lash,
For an older film, how about The 10th Victim.

Others to consider might be The Giver and Logan's Run
