AMD Beep messages

I have an Gigabyte GA700N Pro2 mobo with AMD XP 2800 CPU,
Gigabyte Radeon 9200SE, Dvico Fusion HDTV-B tv/capture card.

While capturing video, the System ( Win XP Pro and Ulead Vid Studio 8) began freezing after a couple of minutes, necessitatinf reboot via power switch.

This happened several times.

Now when I try to boot the PC I get one long beep, repeated after a while. The PC has to be turned off at the wall as the power switch has no effect.

I've swapped memory ( from an identical mobo), removed the DVB-T card etc to no avail.

I'm not keen to swap the CPUs between the 2 PCs incase I stuff up my 2nd PC.

I guess that the problem is either the CPU or Mobo - nothing shows on monitor at all.

Help Please.

The beep codes on start up are normally from BIOS. What BIOS do you have?

One long beep on startup, repeated every few seconds, with nothin' else happenin', means a critical something attached to the motherboard is missing or not recognized. That could be memory, video, or even the processor itself. If all of those check out, sometimes resettin' the CMOS will correct the problem. Consult your motherboard's documentation at its vendor's website for instructions applicable to your motherboard - but often, disconnectin' the machine from power, removin' the CMOS battery, then holding the power switch down for 15 to 30 seconds, replacin' the battery with a fresh one, and powerin' back up will do the trick. Just sometimes, though, not always. If the memory, processor, and video card all check out and are properly seated, and a CMOS reset was no help, the problem most likely is a bad motherboard. It might be a faulty card or memory slot, or processor mount, but by the time you get that deep, replacin' the motherboard is prolly the most practical way to go.
