Donnie Darko ( movie spoilers ! )

Reply Thu 17 Feb, 2005 09:09 pm
This has to be the dumbest movie title I have heard in a long time. But for some reason it is SO catchy it made me rent it.

And i loved it! ( such a mind trip! )

The first time I saw the wicked bunny, I thought of Brand X's avatar that for the longest time I thought was an off centered rendition of the Tick... now I will just think of him as an evil bunny.

But, I am still mulling over the end.
Frank is a real person? A ghost?
Was Donnie finally able to turn back time and just decided not to get out of his bead so his g/f would live? Or did he just not realize WHEN in time he was going back??????

I loved it. And, it twisted my mind so that it's still untwisting. Actually, I saw butterfly effect after Donnie Darko and am a little confused as to each movie's details.

Butterfly effect was fabulous. I think it is one of my top 10 favorite at that.
Donnie Darko was the one where the young man is diagnosed with paranoid schitzophrenia after he talks to his therapist about being able to see the futiure. He sees this " friend" Named Frank who has an evil bunny suit on ( Laughing ) and is threatning to end the world. He goes on to do some wierd stuff.. He burns down Patrick Swayzes' house and it turns out he is a child porn producer, floods his school... etc..
ring a bell?

He was the man at the school that was supposedly the motivational speaker. He was trying to teach kids to " not be a slave to thier fears" He had the videos that were shown in class, had the metting in the big hall where Donnie called him the antichrist and told him that everything he said was just a big lie....

I distinctly remember being very anxious because I didn't know exactly what had happened at the end of the movie. Did it work? Did the world end?

Mr wolf says that he thinks that because Frank killed Donnie's g/f that he DOESNT end the world because of guilt and that he gives Donnie the chance to go back in time to allow that not to happen.

but i have no clue how he got to THAT conclusion... Shocked

Im thinking the same thing.
It was good enough to warrant another viewing..
And left many possibilities open.
As a good movie should!

POSSIBLE SPOILER AHEAD

My view is that Donnie doesn't go back in time but the parallel universe he is in is erased. I'm not sure how many agree with the concept that there is not only time travel involved but a parallel universe (a mirror planet?)

Movie like "Memento," "Mulholland Drive" and this film deserve more than one viewing as their mystery is more penetrable on multiple viewings. They do require diligent concentration so if one has ADD it's going to be a problem.

There's a lot of user reviews and discussions on their boards regarding the meaning (and quality) of DD at IMDb:

You can filter out spoilers there.

From what I have learned, there are at least 9 dimensions and I think we humans are only able to perceive 3? or 4?
Thanks for the links.. I will read through them.

The fourth dimension is time and we do have a cognizant perception of the passing of time. We can look into the past through reading history. We can apprehend or anticipate the future but we can't see it. The future can be predicted by careful analysis of history and applying philosophical and rational ideals to arrive at a conclusion. "Donnie Darko" addresses this and I think quite well as it leaves a lot of the conclusions up to the viewer. It's not traditional storytelling and can confound many. That doesn't make it a bad movie, just one difficult to understand. I don't believe it's pretentious in presentation and it does get a wildly divided range of opinion on whether it is a good film or not but I haven't read any good reasons to hate it. I can see where one could be ambivalent to it construction.

I for the life of me can never remember the diffrent dimensions .
I remember not too long ago I had read this book about the fabric of time. And how that 'time' can actually fold to bring diffrent times/dimensions closer together. And with that concept time travel was possible..

I do not remember the exact details about that, and i will have to hunt down the book in my library and re read it.. but I was thinking that was a possibility in the movie as well. Frank essentially created a wormhole to travel back to Donnie and in doing so killed his girlfriend wich wasnt ment to happen. Donnie learned how to open that worm hole and went back and changed it by not getting out of his bed..

ug.. I gotta find that book now. I am forgetting alot of details. ..
