i am in desperate need of help... ie homepage get redirected to some search engine, often times an open webpage will get redirected back to the search engine..tried the spyware programs, nothing....deleted the "trusted zones" in the hijack log but they keep regenerating. i am lost..help would be greatly appreciated.

Back at the Desktop, double-click on the file and click on Yes when asked to merge the information.

Now,
Take the machine offline (disconnect from the internet by pulling phone line or whatever)

Empty the TIF (Temporary Internet Files)
To do so use Control Panel > Internet Options(or right click the IE icon on the desktop and choose Properties)
Click Delete Files on the General Tab - place a check in the Delete all offline content box and then press OK

Run the Killbox you downloaded earlier
- choose Tools > Delete Temp Files and click OK
In Killbox - put a check next to "Delete on Reboot".
Copy and paste each of the following lines (the ones in bold type) one at a time into the topmost box.
Then click the red button with the X after each.
It will ask you if you want to reboot each time you click it, answer NO until after you've pasted the last file name, at which time you should answer Yes.

Use the: "Check for Updates Now" option and download the latest reference files
Use the Start button, and on the next window, select: Perform Full System Scan
Press Next, and let Ad-aware scan the hard drive
When finished, right-click the window with the entries, choose: Select All from the menu, and click Next
Once AdAware has removed the entries, close the program
Restart the computer

Download the DelDomains zip file and unzip it to your desktop.

DelDomains

Right-click on the deldomains.inf file and select 'Install'

Reboot your computer,

hey don, glad to be on board. thanks for the quick response. you're right this is a nasty one. went through the directions except the part with safe mode and looking for the files to delete in the system32 folder...couldnt find a single one in the folder. symptoms are the same and actually my browser is now extremely slow. took me 15 minutes just to get here...

Here's what I'd suggest - you might wanna wait a bit and see if Don77 agrees or has any other ideas, though, since he's already started on this one.

There's an updated HJT - the latest is available HERE. I'd recommend you uninstall the version you have and get the current one.

Print out these instructions, and do the steps in the order listed.

Update your Antivirus and have it run a full system scan.

Run the Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool

Open Spybot Search&Destroy (which I see you have on your machine), and have it check for updates. Once fully updated, select "Immunize", and click the green "Immunize" Plus Sign. In the lower pane, "Permanently running bad download blocker for Internet Explorer", check the box next to "Enable permanent blocking of bad addresses in Internet Explorer", and in the dropdown below that select "Block all bad pages silently". If you do not have JavaCool's Spyware Blaster installed, click the link in the middle pane to download it, or click HERE to get it. Install it, have it check for updates, then select "Enable all protection" and exit.

When that's done, close Spybot without runnin' "Check for problems" yet.

If you don't have it, or the Pro version, download, install, and update AdAware SE Personal. once its been updated, click the "Gear" button. Under "General Settings", all buttons should be set to green. Under "Scanning", "Drives and Folders", "Scan within Archives" should be green, both "Skip xxxx " options should be red. Under "Memory and Registry", all 5 buttons should be green. Under "Advanced", "Shell Integration" , "Move deleted files to Recycle Bin" should be green. Under "Logfile Detail Level", all 3 buttons should be set to green. Under "Alternate Data Streams, both buttons should be red. Under "Startup", click to select "Use Custom scan settings". For now, ignore "Defaults" and "Interface". Under "Tweak", "Scanning Settings", "Unload recognized processes ... " and "Scan registry for all users ... " should be green. Under "Cleaning Engine", "Always try to unload ... ", "During removal, unload Explore and IE ... ", and "Let Windows remove files ... " should be green. Once those settings have been verified, close AdAware without runnin' it.

Download CWS Shreddeder. Don't run it yet.

Download and install Cleanup. Just install it, don't run it yet.

Download Microsoft AntiSpyware. Just download, install, and update it, don't run it yet.

Download LSP Fix and Winsock Fix - don't do anything with 'em right now other than download 'em. If needed later to repair your internect connection (they may or may not be necessary) they'll be available.

Download Move On Boot. Just download it to an easily remembered place; we won't use it yet, we may not even need it, but it'll be available if necessary. If it comes to that, I'll provide further instructions pertinent to it. It won't be used in this first runthrough.

When that's been done, disconnect from the internet, reboot into safemode, log on as Administrator. Enable Search to see all files, folders, and extensions; Open "My Computer", go to "Tools">" Folder Options">"View" tab, select "Show Hidden Files and Folders", uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types", uncheck "Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)", select "Apply to All Folders" -"Yes" >Apply>OK

Turn off System Restore; Right-click "My Computer", select "Properties" >" System Restore", check "Turn off System Restore" >Apply >OK You will lose your previous restore points, so be sure Windows is operatin' OK otherwise - apart from your browser issues - before doin' this. When things are cleaned up, you should reverse the process and create a new restore point.

Run the new version of HijackThis, WITH NO BROWSERS OR OTHER WINDOWS OPEN

Have it fix the following:

Go to "Start">"Settings">"Control Panel">"Internet Options"> "Delete Cookies">"OK>"Delete Files", select "Delete all offline content">"OK" While still in "Internet Options", click the "Security" tab. Highlight the "Trusted Sites" Zone, select "Custom Level", select "Sites", and remove everything, if anything, there. Now set all Zones to "Default", and exit.

Run CWS Shredder in "Fix" mode.

Now, run Spybot S&D, and have it fix whatever it finds. If it asks to run again at next boot, grant permission, reboot normally, let it run to completion, and reboot back into safemode, logging on as Administrator.

Do the same with AdAware, being sure "Custom Scan" is selected. If it asks to run again at boot, grant permission, reboot normally, let it run to completion and fix whatever it finds, then reboot back into safemode, log on as Administrator.

Run Microsft AntiSpyWare, letting it fix whatever, if anything, it finds.

Run "Cleanup" and when it has finished, reboot normally. Run Spybot S&D, AdAware, and Microsoft AntiSpyware each once more, having them fix whatever, if anything, they find.

Now see if you can connect to the internet. If you cannot, run LSP Fix and Winsock Fix. When you can and do connect to the internet, go immediately to Windows Update[/i][/u] and GET ALL CRITICAL UPDATES, INCLUDING SP2

When that is done, please post a fresh HJT log to this thread for further analysis. If you notice any new or continued symptoms of yuckware infestation, please try to describe the problem clearly.

whew..thanks don and timber, it seems a lot better now but microsoft antispyware-real time protection is still brigning up options for me to block when i reboot..i dont think everything is completely gone..its like they regenerate even after the spyware programs and hjt deletes on each windows restart..ie browser is better but heres 2 microsoft spyware detection blocks

Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests. Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox. Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer.
Download Spyware Blaster and SpywareGaurd
Check for updates after you install them, And check weekly as well
Keep Ad-aware and Spybot handy, Check them for updates and run them weekly
Same with your Anti Virus,

Be sure and give the Temp folders a cleaning out now and then as well, Make sure after you clean your Temp files to empty out your Recycle bin as well.

Remeber to Check Windows for updates

Probably a good time to create a new restore point See Here Name it clean or something like that,

DigitalCity is a real swarmin' area for yuckware fiends - I'd be real leery of that. The URL appears in lotsa block lists and HOSTS files.

Thats a recognized signature for backdoor.haxdoor trojan, which could be at the base of your infestation/re-infestation problems. If your problems do come back, this is one of the things I'd wanna get sorted out right up front, and it can be a real bear to deal with. Lets hope it ain't gonna be necessary to go there.

Anyhow, you might get some performance benefit from followin' up on this stuff listed below; it'll streamline your startup, and leave more system resources available. Mosta this stuff just hogs resources needlesly if it launches with Windows.

You can still use Messenger whenever you want, but it won't be lurkin' in the background doin' nothin' but eatin'resources when you ain't usin' it.

Since you've got Spybot S&D, you might first wanna go into its "Tools", select "Startups", find the corresponding entries mentioned in dark red above, and "toggle" them off - they won't start with Windows then, but if you find you'd prefer one or another would, you can always go back and toggle it back on. That might be a more comfortable startin' point than killin' 'em with HJT.

Looks like a pretty clean log to me now. There are more startups than really needed in most cases, but no biggie there - if your startup configuration works for you, its the right configuration for you - its your machine, after all. Anyhow, seems you're finally back in contorl of it ... keep it that way. Make sure SpyBot S&D, AdAware-SE, SpywareBlaster, and Microsoft Anti-Spyware all are regularly updated, and of course be sure your Windows and your Antivirus are too, and that some sorta firewall - even if only the one built into WinXP SP2 - is on. Enable all protections, run regular full scans, and just use your head out there on the 'net.

actually i'm having a little trouble with the windows firewall the following link outlines my exact symptoms but i don't know how my computer is identified as a "client computer that is in a Windows Small Business Server 2003-based network". i am unable to change my firewall settings due to the group policy control.
