This throws a whole new light on the case. Personally, I am starting to wonder if the whole thing wasn't entirely staged by the media of the time. The case was opened when two actors (there's your clue - actors) went to the police concerned about the whereabouts of Crippen's wife. When Crippen was take off the boat in America his face was covered in a scarf and he wore a large hat, thus concealing his identity. So it might not have been him.

UPDATE: The ship whose captain reported the presence of Crippen among the passengers belonged to the White Star Line, the same company that owned the Titanic. Dr Crippen just happened to be on one of the very few ships that had wireless telegraphy at that time. The sinking of the Titanic is hypothesized to have been a massive insurance fraud in which the Titanic and the sister ship the Olympic were switched.
