You have asked a question that would require a treatise to answer properly. Would you please try to narrow your question?

Phoenix is right -- I wouldn't have the time to write something which could easily be a treatise for graduation from film school. Is this what you are obliged to write? If so, I'd just come out with it.

I would suggest reading Roger Eberts "Book of Film" which is a collection if dissertations and essays by filmmakers, film historians and critics. You can also Google the question and see what other books there are -- I don't even have the time to give a bibliography and believe the Ebert book is an excellent start.
