thunder's quote, "I am really dissapointed in that reply Frank. I thought you were intelligent enough to realize that 1 or 2 perverts don't represent the catholic church." Those one or two perverts of the catholic church harmed thousands of chiildren in their trust and care. Minimizing the number according to your own belies what really happened; you are not ready to handle the truth.

It's probably closer to the truth that each diocese had one or two perverts.
That doesn't imply that all catholics are bad. It does imply that the church leadership protected their own more than the children until recent times.

Do you think that simply because humans make up their own moral code...they cannot devise a moral code that proscribes abusing kids???

Why do you superstitious people suppose that only ancient Hebrews can devise a moral code? Or do you really buy into the notion that a god devised those morals? IF so...why do you suppose the god devised some of the moral code items contained in Leviticus and Deuteronomy?

I was just trying to make a point. I believe that obviously, man can devise a moral code, and enforce it, but what backing would it have? Who is to say what is wrong and right? Wouldn't it depend on the individual? In that case, you would have as many different morals, as there are people. O.K that was a little exhagerated, but I just don't see how if I decide to do something, and another man says it is wrong...?

Try to think clearly, now, Thunder.

What enforces the code of your gods?

Humans can devise societies...which in turn can decide what is and what is not allowed....and then institute laws and law enforcement to keep society functioning.

Frankly, I am not interested in what is moral or immoral...I am interested in what allows society to functionan reasonably.

If a god is invented that wants to consider homosexuality immoral...and slavery moral...that is okay with me. But I consider anyone who would worship or respect that god to be a goddam idiot...and a traitor to humanity.

Your god fits that former description. It is up to you whether or not you fit the latter.

Quote:
...why would I even care?

If you need a god to tell you that killing other people...or stealing...or lying is wrong and that you should not do it and that society suffers if you do...

...you are in a sad state of affairs.

I pity anyone in that shape.

Your god...if it is the god described in the Bible...is one of the most disgusting gods ever invented by the human mind.

Disgusting? For punishing those who have done evil?

No...for being disgusting and for acting in a disgusting way....and for suggesting disgusting forms of behavior.

Your god, Thunder, is jealous, quick to anger, slow to forgive, comically tyrannical, arbitrary, vengeful, revenge driven, petty, capricious, murderous, barbaric....and DISGUSTING beyond all imagination.

But don't take my word for it. Read the Bible. Your god actually brags about all that shyt.

Quote:
Wow, you really naive if you think there would be a god that doesn't enforce his will. He even forgives us, and you still don't want to believe that you will ultimately have to pay for your actions.

I don't intend to indulge in fairytale thinking in my life, Thunder. If you want to waste your time and life doing so...be my guest.

Quote, "...that you will ultimately have to pay for your actions." Boy, that FEAR must be all consuming in the lives of christians. They've bought into it hook, line and sinker.

There are agnostic Christians...just as there are agnostic atheists.

But why not simply become an agnostic who happens to think that much of what Jesus taught is enlightened, comforting, and intelligent.

And, if you choose, live your life in conformity with much of what Jesus taught.

I am such an agnostic.

That's what I love about Frank. Short, concise, and to the point. Oh, and correct!

I didn't really have much of a point, at least not one very relevant to the thread or what you said. I just started following this thread again and only skimmed the last page, missing much of what had been said.

dauer, That's a dangerous habit on a2k. I do that when I do a half-ass job of reading the posts, and invariable, somebody jumps on it - with good reason. I try to watch myself, but it still happens.

cicerone,

especially on a2k. On other boards I sometimes frequent it's often possible to skim and get the general idea because of the herd mentality. But here there are too many people coming to their own conclusions which makes it harder to fill in the blanks. Be it theist, agnostic, or atheist; on a2k I find the assumptions I make about people are often wrong, as has happened in my thread with rex red a few times.

Frank,

Thanks. It's nice to be posting here again. I stopped posting because I found there were too many a2kers to the right and the left of me, and almost none who could relate to my position. But after spending more time on Orthodox boards I have to say people to the right and the left is preferable. The greatest thing I gained from going to Orthodox boards was a greater sense of my own views and a diminishing of the desire to give the traditional answers to questions about Judaism. There are enough people doing that online as it is and I realize I'm not going to be able to make everybody happy.

jeez this is kind of stupid I think.... it's obvious that religion will never be totally gone.... it is too engraved in the human mind.... the need to believe that after you die something really good or really bad is going to happen to you Idea but eventually I think that some religions will become supremely dominant over others, and some might be completely lost or wiped out Rolling Eyes Twisted Evil Razz
