Quick note: osso and I (and some others here) have been through a few rounds of actual people actually being extremely upset by this kind of thing. Not hypothetical, people might be upset, but we've seen the upset.
It's one of those things that are not WRONG -- if someone's gorgeous, heck, go ahead and say it -- and can come from the best of intentions, but still creates an atmosphere where people we like a lot feel distinctly uncomfortable.
