on monday we took a short half-hour drive to the LOYALIST LANDING SITE AND BURIAL GROUND just west of here .
it's located on the ADOLPHUSTOWN REACH - a side-arm of lake ontario .

http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/2508/adolphustown017pf1.jpg

some of the LOYALISTS coming from new york state landed here in 1784 and settled in the area on crown land .
btw many of the loyalists were former hessian soldiers .

until a few years ago there were still individual graves and tombstones .
since the tombstones - made mostly from local limestone - started to disintegrate , they have now been set in a wall of rememberance .

hi , mctag :
the UNITED EMPIRE LOYALISTS - quite a few of whom were former hessian soldiers - played a large role in the early settlement of upper canada .
to this day they are allowed to put "U.E." behind their family names !
about an hour to the west of here - in prince edward county on lake ontario - many german family names can be found at the farmgates : such as huffnagel , hagermann - we buy "heritage" potatoes at their farm - and others .
they were at one time described as german "mercenaries" in the U.S. - but many americans come here happily for the good fishing now  .
take care !

hamburger & mctag,

There is a noted historical work titled The German Dimension of American History. It can be found in some public libraries. Smile

jw :
there is a wealth of information available on the UNITED EMPIRE LOYALISTS .
our local library and also the library at QUEEN'S UNIVERSITY in kingston has accumulated much historical material .
additionally , the LOYALIST RESEARCH CENTRE AND MUSEUM in ADOLPHUSTOWN has its own library and collection of documents .

cleo and bailey do not quite seem to appreciate the significance of the obelisk , but they did enjoy running through the park !

Thanks for this information. I have been reading "Scots in the USA" and a lot of my countrymen, too, came up into Canada from NY state and elsewhere in New England at the time of the American Revolution.

My sister-in-law lives in Ottawa and we have been at Upper Canada Village among other places there.

Well, that canal water doesn't look very polluted. Does it reek? I used to read stories about how polluted their canals were. Have the veneziani been cleaning up their canals?

The canal water seems quite clean, and is not smelly, but you sometimes get the whiff of drains as you wander around the alleyways.
Not too surprising when you consider that all of the drains are below water level.
They must have some sophisticated methods to keep it all flowing.

This is what I have been working on for the past few weeks, there are two pools and a hot tub. One pool is fairly simple, it's a lap/competition pool, they built it straight...they have to, in case a state or world record is broken, to avoid the embarrassment of the pool being a foot short, or as I have found on the other pool...2-3 feet off of spec...but the other pool is just a leisure pool, so it's not critical...sort of.

I do not do the actual structure, though I wish I had been there while they were doing the forming and shooting on the gunite...oy. I've had to rebuild many things on the leisure pool, and the hot tub is about 90% redone. I am the finisher, I do the ceramic, and set the depth markers...might do some plastering if they need me to....but I'm not supposed to build the pools...well I guess I do now.

As you can see in the picture, I laid a few feet of tile...Monday or maybe Tuesday, I don't remember anymore, because it's been a very long week. The day I put that up, I was stopped...the tile is quite loud...and the college rejected it....I spent the rest of the week just hanging out waiting for a decision.
