I've been using mozilla for most of my browsing lately, but as soon as I finished a windows update (I figured I'd stay current because IE still works better for a few key websites) I got nailed by something (I think).

Thanks to Don or Timber or who ever takes up my plea for help.....

litttlek, did you purchase spyassian ?

It's not a highly recommended programs, Rogue/Suspect Anti-Spyware Products & Web Sites see Here
I would recommend you remove it, but its your choice,
If you choose to remove it do so via Add/Remove programs.
Then have HJT fix this
O3 - Toolbar: AdwareFilter - {1028F737-81E7-452B-A860-E50CAD90A08C} - C:\Program Files\AdwareFilterToolBar\AdwareFilter.dll

Then boot to safe mode serach for and delete the folder,

C:\Program Files\AdwareFilterToolBar\AdwareFilter.dll <--Delete Folder

Let us know how the computer is running now,

ooooh, thanks! I must have fallen for the sound-alike name - I don't think I actually paid for it. I'm down loading a free version of lavasoft ad-aware. It's scanning now - seems to see lots of bad files....?

My computer is running ok, just wanted to stay ahead of the game by running a spyware check before it got bogged down.

Now littlek Rolling Eyes

Have a run through the steps outlined in this Post

I thought I had you go through that post a while back ?
Make sure you have all the downloads in that post and run them as instructed,

When your done with all that,

Download the following programs, For keeping crap off your system to begin with
Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests. Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox. Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer.
Download Spyware Blaster and SpywareGaurd
Check for updates after you install them, And check weekly as well
Keep Ad-aware and Spybot handy, Check them for updates and run them weekly
Same with your Anti Virus,

Be sure and give the Temp folders a cleaning out now and then as well, Make sure after you clean your Temp files to empty out your Recycle bin as well.

Remeber to Check Windows for updates

I hate downloading al the stuff to run checks on my puter. I did get spy-aware and think I will buy the preventative software they sell - is that ok? My hard drive is filling up with clutter and I don't know what's safe to trash and what's not, I get nervous about downloading my clutter.

So, I cleaned out ALL the files that Ad-aware found, deleted spyassassin, fixed the spy assassin junk with HJT, rebooted in safe mode and deleted the spyassassin .dll file.

I will work on the other stuff from your link above. But not tonight, and probably not until wednesday.....

Thanks Don, it's always good to get a kick in the butt on this stuff.
