A friend of my wife is looking to buy a new road bicycle and is trying to decide between a aluminum/carbon frame, all carbon frame, or a steel frame. My preference is alum/carbon. She is only about 5'6" average weight. I am looking for suggestion without being biased.

I would never do steel, that one is for sure. While they are probably better in the short run, they are unsafe in the long. that's a frame that can crack right under you as you're going downhill at 35-40mph. well, or uphill or any other way, but that would sound less menacing. i saw some ugly injuries (one included 8 fractures on a face area, most horrifying thing ever)...so aluminum or carbon, titanium, but don't let them get the steel frame. anyhow, my knowledge is shamefully limited, all i know is that i love riding. and that i don't want steel... and that i need coffee right now.
