Reformat FAT32 to NTFS without using convert.....

Confused I am running WINDOWS XP HOME EDITION on an AMD 2400+ System with WINDOWS XP running on a 40Gb Primary (C:\) FAT32 Drive, and various media files stored on a 120Gb Slave (Z:\) NTFS Drive.

Shocked I currently have over 70Gb free on my NTFS (Z:\) Drive, and about 20Gb free on my FAT32 (C:\) Drive.

Idea After hearing that there may be problems with using "convert C: /fs:ntfs", what I would like to be able to do is to copy all the files from My Primary (C:\) FAT32 Drive onto a folder in my Slave (Z:\) NTFS Drive, then Format my Primary (C:\) FAT32 Drive to NTFS, then move the files back from the folder on the Slave (Z:\) NTFS Drive onto the Newly Formatted Primary (C:\) NTFS Drive, and then be able to continue running WINDOWS XP HOME EDITION without having to actually re-install the whole damn thing from scratch.

Question Could it possibly be as simple as this, or am I likely to cause myself horrendous problems by trying it. Question Is it likely that WINDOWS XP HOME EDITION will not work if I simply copy all the files to another disk, format the original disk, and then copy them back again. Question

Exclamation I've definitely got plenty of space on my 120Gb NTFS Drive to be able to backup all of the contents of my 40Gb FAT32 Drive, so having enough space is not a problem. Exclamation

I also have the following programs installed and running and am wondering if there might be problems with them after the above procedure :----
Arrow 1). Norton SytemWorks 2005
Arrow 2). ZoneAlarm V 5.5
Arrow 3). Spywareguard V 2.2
Arrow 4). SET@home GUI Cient with SETIgate
Arrow 5). Diskeeper Pro V 9
Arrow 6). TweakXP pro V 4
Arrow &7). A whole bunch of software such as SpyBot S&D, CWShredder, SpywareBlaster, Ad-Aware SE, SpySubtract & Stinger, etc, etc............

Very Happy I would be very grateful if somebody could advise me about this. Have you successfully done the same sort of thing, or has the attempt knackered you or your system. Question Exclamation Please let me know.....

Thanks in advance for your responses...... Smile

First of all you shouldnt encounter any problems at all running programs on a NTFS hard disk. Only the operating system sees the actual structure, the applications simply rely on the OS to access the files, so they dont know if they are on NTFS or FAT32.

I wouldnt have thought you would encounter any problems running convert. What I would be tempted to do is transfer all your files over to your other disk, then run convert. Try it for a few days and everything should be fine and you wont have lost a thing! If its fine delete your backup off the slave drive.

If convert does screw up, reormat your C drive and reinstall windows (using NTFS this time) and install all your programs again, then copy your backup off the oher drive and you are back up and running.

There are a couple of things to do in advance if the conversion is to be efficient. If you do not take these preliminary steps, you are liable to end up with only 512 byte clusters, which is not a good idea.

Converting FAT32 system to NTFS on WINDOWS XP.......
Shocked Cheers people. I'm going to take my time about this...

Idea If I understand you all properly, I think I need to do the following:---

Arrow 1). Get rid of as much junk from my XP system as I reasonably can.
Arrow 2). Backup my XP system from my FAT32 Primary drive to my NTFS Slave drive.
Arrow 3). Use BOOTITNG.EXE to create a bootable floppy.
Arrow 4). Boot the floppy and run maintenance to create a NTFS Partition on my FAT32 Drive.
Arrow 5). ReBoot my XP system, then defragment the drive.
Arrow 6). At a command prompt, run CONVERT C: /FS:NTFS
Arrow 7). Get XP up and running and activated etc,etc,etc.........
Arrow 8). Test XP out for a few days to see if there are any problems.
Arrow 9). Either keep the new setup if it works, or get back on A2K to see if anyone can help me sort the mess out if it all goes pear shaped Exclamation Shocked Exclamation ..........

I'd better get some of the finer details down on paper in case I forget what I'm doing half way through !!!........
