@dlowan,
A top of 24 predicted for today, Deb! And a much cooler week coming up. Phew.Very Happy

And a "shower or two" on the cards, too! I think we've already had one of them. I awoke this morning to the sound of rain on the roof! Surprised

Now if those hideous winds just hold off .........

@msolga,
glad to hear the temps are getting better, hopefully some rain will ease the fire threat

@djjd62,
I hope so, too, djjd. But we're not really expecting all that much rain, sadly.

Now, if these cursed winds would cease, that would really help keep things under control.

It's starting to seriously bite. With much more to come. Here we go, folks! :

5000 jobs go as crisis bitesFebruary
26, 2009 - 5:31PM

Thousands of Australians will be wiped from companies' payrolls as the economic downturn continues to bite and expectations of corporate growth wane.

Quote:
In the past two days alone, three announcements of large-scale cut-backs have left more than 5000 people facing the prospect of unemployment - and prompted a senior government figure to say that no Australian job is safe.

@msolga,
I want to do everything I can to save people's jobs. My response has been, when at all possible, to buy Australian. And buy as much of what I need in my immediate, local community .... all the better if what I'm buying is locally produced. In my particular community this includes a lot of locally produced food, like pasta, sauces, locally produced sauces, fruit & vegetables, etc .... (I'm lucky to live in a strong migrant community.)

But it's difficult to find some completely Oz owned & produced products when it comes to mass manufactured goods. Can you name any genuinely Australian-owned companies anymore?

@msolga,
msolga what I've read in the papers in the last few days about these CEO's walking aways with millions in salaries and perks at the costs of sacking thousands of ordinary hard working people makes my blood boil. I wish there was a legitimate way of getting rid of them bloodsuckers, permanently!

With all the "disaster publicity" going to the Victorian bushfires, this NW Queensland flood has received very little media coverage. Just imagine - 8 weeks of conditions like this!:

Tempers are fraying among cattle producers as they near the beginning of a third month in flood. (User submitted: Nola Gallagher, file photo)

Quote:
Graziers are becoming increasingly frustrated with what they say is a slow response to their situation by the state and federal governments.

Some locals have even dubbed it "the great ignored flood of the north-west".

The sparsely populated north-west of Queensland is home to the nation's cattle kings and queens but property owners say they're being treated like anything but royalty.

Rebecca Corbett, from Oakland Park in the Gulf region, says tempers are fraying among cattle producers as they near the beginning of a third month in flood.

"It's very stressful, we haven't been able to move for eight weeks," she said.

"We didn't receive a food drop for six weeks and that was pretty hard to get. We don't seem to be getting much help or the help we really need." ...<cont>

@msolga,
Their cheerfulness and stoicism under this has amazed me.

Now it's in its third month. I can't imagine it.

If only we could get that water to where it is needed!!!~

Hopefully at least it will replenish the Great Artesian Basin.

A lot of it is on its way to Lake Eyre....so I guess it will make a lot of birds and tourists (and hence tourism focused businesses up there) pretty happy.

@dlowan,
Sound rather like the cheerfulness and stoicism is starting to wear a bit thin up north, Deb!

Hey, I read about Lake Eyre this morning (in The Australian). Cheered me enormously! Very Happy

@msolga,
Mentioned Lake Eyre on another thread this morning msolga.

"Morning crew, best news for a long time, cool change hit us overnight and glorious rain is forecast for next Monday and Tuesday. Also the floodwaters from Queensland have started to fill our Lake Eyre, an enormous inland sea in the north of our State. To give you an idea of its size, it is as big as Germany, France and Italy combined and has only filled 3 times during the past 150 years. Despite its remoteness it will draw thousands of tourists in the coming months to witness a natural phenomena which will bring wild life, birds and fish to this arid area for a while until the water evaporates and the area once again becomes the driest and hottest place on this planet.

Just had to tell you this as they showed the water entering the lake on television this morning with thousands of birds following the water, an incredible sight."
