Oh - feel so bad for you guys. Dutchy has been telling me how awful things are in Adelaide... and power outtages starting. So hoping the winds don't pick up and the heat will die down. Take care y'all. Thinking about ya.

Thanks, Izzie.

An extruciatingly hot day today. I didn't even attempt to go out my front door & face it. Things are have cooled down a little tonight (Friday) in Melbourne, anyway. (Expected top temperature of only mid 30s timorrow. Only! Wink ) Though it sounds like things will remain pretty extreme in the north of the state for a while yet, were dapdad lives. But so far, so good! (regarding potential bushfires.) Fires in the eastern side of the state (Victoria) have not beem brought under control yet, despite the best efforts of fire fighters today. It's very distressing to learn that these fires were most likely deliberately lit. What can you say to that? Neutral
As for Adelaide & SA .... Deb? Dutchy? Are you breathing any easier tonight?
I hope so!

@msolga,
DAMN!. I hope you guys are all coping . I remember when I lived in the Calif Valley north of Sacramento. The summer heat would be 105 to 110 and It would feel like your head would explode.

When we get really hot weather , we gather all the stock into a barn and shaded paddock and spray them dowm]n. They all put aside their differences and seem to just enjoy the brief soaking respites that a cold spray provides.
Hoping the heat breaks soon with some cooling showers.

I know that area well, dadpad. Grew up in the Latrobe valley, a bit north of the fires. Sigh.

@dadpad,
Another 43.1 degree day in Adelaide but fortunately no major bushfires. Lots of suburbs suffering power black outs though. Authorities have a lot to answer for letting the system rundown. Several deaths of elderly people have been attributed directly to the heat where the power was cut off deliberately.

@farmerman,
Thanks farmer.

Things have cooled doen a little tonight were I am, in the city (Melbourne). But I must admit I felt my head could explode earlier in the day. Too many days of this!

The heat's not letting up in the north of the state (dadpad territory +), though. They will have to be on constant (bushfire) alert.

It's terrible to learn that today's fires (in Gippsland, Victoria) where most likely deliberately lit. Everyone's best laid plans, people taking every care in the extreme situation ... & this happens. Sad

A yes. A constant theme!

The number of train cancellations in Melbourne has been phenominal (for those sorts of reasons)! Talk about a meltdown!

It's good that SA/Adelaide wasn't (again!) in the 45 C zone, anyway! You've had a shocking time of it & for much longer.

@msolga,
Supposed to be cooling down more at night for the NEXT week of it.

I have to say, I have been surprised at how well my little apartment has stood up.

It has been 31 C every night in here when I have got home (I'd have thought the walls would have warmed up and be transmitting heat by now!)

I have been running the air conditioner until I go to bed, and have made it through the night on the accumulated coolth.

The nights have been way too hot to open up...I go out and refresh my poor plants really late at night.

Thank heaven for blinds...though they are internal.

People are really starting to frazzle, though.

I had to drive way out to the northern suburbs, and I made sure to be extra specially courteous and let people in and all that. 'Tis the weather for road rage!

Last heat wave we had no air conditioners, so this is fine by comparison.

Amen to the Friday thing.

I think my brain has fried ... Thank god it's Friday, I meant to say. Obviously.

So no family court appearance required, then? Good, good!

Good about your apartment standing up to the heat, Deb. I mean, this is about as extreme as things are likely to get, right?

Speaking of doing stuff in the relative cool of the night: I'm doing my washing now (10:33 pm). A few loads. It'll be dry by the morning, no troubs.

Melbourne blackout causes chaos
Posted 3 hours 38 minutes ago

Quote:
There is chaos in Melbourne tonight, with major electricity outages causing severe disruption and depriving nearly 500,000 people of power in the city, northern suburbs, Geelong and western Victoria.

Buildings have been evacuated after alarms were tripped by the interruption to the power supply and the Metropolitan Fire Brigade has been called in to help people stranded in lifts.

Traffic lights in the city are not working and public transport is at a virtual standstill, with commuters facing lengthy delays as the power failure further compounds problems on the rail network.

Hundreds of people at Flinders Street Station have been left waiting on platforms as the power outage affected signals along the train network just before 7:00pm AEDT.

Other stations were also affected including Upfield, Werribee, Sydenham, Craigieburn, Alamein, Williamstown, Epping and Lilydale.

Commuters are being told to expect hour-long delays, with Connex cancelling at least seven train line services. ... <cont>

daughter went to see a show in the city (Poor Boy) but it was cancelled due to the power outages. not to be out done she sh could take advantage of the free public transport offer only to find all trains and trams cancelled due to the power outages. pretty easy to offer free public transport when its not going to run anyway.
she had to walk home 3 - 4 km. City to Middle Park
she got diverted at southbank because they were evacuating crown casino due to fire alarms being tripped because of power outage.

@msolga,
..... however, on the credit side ....

I've just been outside, to put my last load of washing on the line (at 12:20 am:lol: ) .... & I can report that, for the first time in quite a while, it's quite pleasant & cool out there! Surprised

... Inside, however, is quite another matter.
