You grow rye?. I only plant it Smile . Mother Nature does most of the rest. Rye is a good tilth builder in ous soils. We rotate crops annually and rye is a biggie to keep the soil from clayballing up and its deep rootlest provide a nice organic touch. We sell rye as a short season crop to the ethanol plant and then get the post alcohol "Must" back all dried out and we use that for sheep food cause the alcohol process takes out the sugars and beefs up the protein. We mix this with shredded alfalfa and feed it at breeding time. Most of the rest of the year, the sheep (ewes) eat pasture. My wife tells me what to do and I just handle the heavy equipment. Shes the farming genius not me. I have enough trouble with other ****.

It grows itself with almost no effort from you, farmer?

Hey, quit your day job & become a baker!

The health conscious folk in your community might think this is an excellent development! Very Happy

10 or 12 mm of rain (about 1/2 inch farmerman).

Some farmers in this area grow rye grass for seed here. I'm not sure if its the same stuff as yours. The seed is harvested and sold to farmers to replant and/or renovate pasture.

FM I'd like to know more about your biomass/ethanol conversion plant.

Saw the niftiest contraption while walking around Williamstown today. It was an upside down plastic bottle full of water hanging from a lovely ornamental tree in someone's front yard. Sitting in the tree, & politely taking turns at drinking from the bottle, were something like 6 beautiful rosellas & a wattle bird. There seemed to be some sort of slow release contraption at the end of the bottle, where they drank from (activated by contact with the birds' beaks). At one stage 2 rosellas were drinking companionably at the same time. It was fascinating. My friend W & I were transfixed & stood watching for ages. We figured there might have been something else (honey perhaps?) mixed with the liquid. The birds obviously loved it & appeared to be "regulars" there! Fantastic!Very Happy

Melbourne's water catchment levels are now "officially" below 30%. I think the last time this happened was around 1968? (Trying to recall exactly what I heard in a news report today.)

Not looking good, is it, despite the recent rains?

Didnt have the Thompson dam then either.

More good rain here today 6.8 mm. April was well down on last year.

We had over 80mm in Adelaide in April, which is double our April average, drought is truly well broken.

Since 1st May, had showers daily, heavily raining here as I type.

I hope those rain dancers up your way are working over-time at it, dadpad!

Imagine the idea of actually running out of water! Shocked

Would love to msolga but I have as much control over the weather as John Howard has over his Senators like that insensitive, unthinking cruel blatherer Bill Heffernan!

I certainly would, have just been outside and blew very hard in your direction, hope my edfforts will pay off. Smile

Need follow up rains though to fill the reservoirs as they are all well below capacity, they are still pumping water from the Murray 24 hours a day to keep up with the demand.

I'm going to watch Collingwood play the Adelaide Crows tomorrow night and that certainly will bring more rain, happens every time I attend a night game. Laughing

Go the mighty maggies!
Booooo hiss to those yucky Crows!

Laughing

Don't forget your rain coat, Dutchy!

.. That seems to be the problem here, Dutchy. It rains cats & dogs .... everywhere but in our catchment areas, for some strange reason! Why, why, why is it so? Confused

I wish I had the $$$$ right now to install a little water tank in my yard!

You can boo and hiss as much as you like, I am a Port Power fan. I'm only going to annoy Eddie Mcguire, I can't stand "Mr. Everywhere". Laughing

A water tank is very handy to have, years ago everybody had one and they then disappeared, but they are making a great colmeback.

I've always had one, we use it to water our plants in summer, we can't drink from it as our roof is asbestos.

Confession: I really was a one-eyed maggie fan, many moons ago, Dutchy. I cried every time we lost a grand final! (Which means, of course, I cried a lot!) Laughing
Can't stand the AFL these days, though ... It's all about $$$$$ & little else. Sad, really ....

Yep, everyone who can afford it is having a tank installed. I would if I could.
I remember the one we had when my family lived on a farm in country Victoria. Full of wrigglers, it was!

What did you think of Mr. Costello's budget last night msolga, is there anything in it for you? Being an election year did you think he handed out a few carrots to boost his party flagging popularity. Smile

Forgive me, but I sort of switched out today, Dutchy. (Political overload & all that ... you'll understand, I'm sure!)
But I find I just can't believe anything they say any more, so why encourage them by taking them seriously? Hmmmmm?
But I'm sure Mr Costello will, by this amazing budget, bring huge joy to Oz AND revive his flagging career!
I believe this is Mr Costello's 12th budget? My god, he must be going nuts playing second fiddle to that nasty little gnome-like creature!

That's ok msolga, you are forgiven Very Happy Yes, I must agree with you, there will be a lot of happiness allround following this "carrot" budget, but I can't feel but help wondering what else he has in store for us, once elected? They can change their policies dramatically and quickly take back what they have given you, there are many examples of that. May be I sound cynical but that's what I've become after many years of watching their shenanigans.
