Farmers in Victoria's parched north-west are rejoicing at the arrival of soaking rain overnight, with a welcome wet weekend on offer for much of the state.
Ian Hastings, a grains farmer who has a property south-west of Ouyen, in the northwest, said 22 millimetres of rain had fallen at his property over night.
"It would be our best fall for a long time and it's still hanging around. We are expecting there could be more during the day, which is very good news."
He said it had been "five or six years . . . even 10 years" since good rain early in the season had allowed farmers to get their crops off to a good start.
"This gives us some surety of a season," he said.
Mr Hastings said it was a brilliant start.
"We haven't had an early break like this for about 10 years. It's very good for us to have a good rain so we can have some security about putting our crops in the ground."
He said other farms in the Ouyen and Walpeup areas had received as much as 26 millimetres.
"They'll be absolutely rejoicing."
"Some (farmers) will wait for 10 days for a germination of grass before they start to sow, other people will start sowing in a couple of days.
"Last year the production on our property was the worst it's been in my 30 years of farming, it was very, very tough. ...<cont>
