Here's what I'm trying to figure out, maybe someone here can help. The Gov of Texas just issued some order that requires that girls entering 6th (?) grade need to have the HPV vaccine. I see that John Howard is putting it on some PBS (?) list, but I don't quite know what that means. Is it now required, or is it just that people can get a government subsidy?
Thanks, anyone who can take a stab at that one!
Means it is government subsidised...for everyone.
They don't have to "Get" a subsidy..ie apply for it.....the cost of the vaccine is subsidised for the entire population.
Something your country is attempting to force Oz to stop doing under the benighted free trade agreement, by the bye.
Pff.
Sorry.
Is there any required or mandatory connotations there? Like if teenaged girls don't get the vaccine they can't go to school?
Soz, fom MUMPAD: I believe that you can choose not to have your child vaccinated, however your child will be removed from school if there is an outbreak of any excludable disease.
There are homeopathic versions of ?some? vaccinations.
You must have a certificate of vaccination when a child begins school
or parents must sign a form saying they have made an informed decision not to vaccinate.
HPV vaccination is only being talked about here just at the moment. we haven't heard much about it.
triple antigen (diptheria tetnus polio) (2 4 6 and 18 months)
measels mumps (12 months)
Rubella (high school girls)
meingacoccle (sp?) (high school children)
All these are provided free of charge
Hepatitis vaccination is available if requested but costs.
some clubs and groups (scouts) require you to show when your last tetanus booster was prior to participating in activities. (so if treatment is required doctors know what dosage to administer).
Both our children have had all these vaccinations without problems
I don't think any vaccinations are mandatory.
Vaccination programs are generally run by local government.
Dutchy wrote:Hi msolga & margo. Pleased you like the place, I'd thought you might have guessed it, because I mentioned it on another thread sometime ago. Dutchy is retired and spend much of his leisure time fishing at this lovely spot which is called Port Lincoln on the tip of Eyre Peninsula. "Beyond the Black Stump" is really near here but not my place of abode. I was merely comparing my favourite SA town with Melbourne and Sydney because I feel each State has its own beautiful spots.
Half your luck, Dutchy!
It's a beautiful spot. Lucky you!
Which fish are catching at the moment?
Hi msolga.
Port Lincoln is really the "pearl" of South Australia we have no other town like it. Unfortunately tucked away at the bottom of Eyre Peninsula, well away from the main road between Adelaide and Perth, it is missed by the majority of tourists. However this is about to change as a 5 star Hotel, built on the seafront, will open its door later on this year and will be aimed at the overseas and local tourist market.
Fishing is always good around the open waters of Port Lincoln. I've just returned and my freezer is full with King George Whiting, Garfish and Snapper fillets. My son who works in the Tuna industry threw in 1/2 dozen Crays and 10kg of cooked King Prawns so you can guess what's on Dutchy's menue for the coming weeks.
That sounds like heaven, Dutchy. Wouldn't mind spending a few stress-less days & weeks there myself! You're lucky.
I just hope the 5 star hotel doesn't ruin the place!
Hey, you should start a "cooking with fish" thread. You must be an expert!
Although photo taken a couple of years ago this was last night's barbie msolga, prawns marinated in garlic and sweet chilli sauce.
I cannot tell you how insanely jealous I am, Dutchy!
You guys certainly have it good!
A snapper that didn't get away.
You're a
skite, Dutchy!
(trying to figure out how much one of those would cost me at my fishmongers.
Forget it!
)
And the holder of the fish is you?
Snapper is pretty cheap at around $9.00 per kilo presently, and yes that old codger is me, msolga
Nice to "see" you, Dutchy!
Exactly as I'd imagined.
I'll take your word on the price of snapper. I'm about due for a fish-fix!
The PBS is the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme, a scheme to subsidise drugs so that they can be made available, under certain conditions, to anyone who needs them, at a standard cost, currently $30.70. (or $4.60 - to pensioners, etc)
The fact that the government is really the only customer for pharmaceutical companies keeps the price of drugs pretty low here, compared to the US.
As dlowan says, the US Free Trade Agreement is trying to overcome this.
The HPV vaccine, Gardasil, developed by the current Australian of the Year, Ian Fraser, is expected to be PBS-listed later this year, with certain restrictions, likely to be something like girls aged 10-15.

Remember your tag-line, MsO...!

Just a
little snapper was what I had in mind, margo!
True, Dutchy.
But you also read the warnings about the dangers of eating too much seafood caught in polluted waters.
I recently discovered some some of the fish sold at a particular market harked from the Mekong Delta. Very polluted environment. That made me think a bit! Now I buy only from a "reputable" fish monger. But you can fish in waters you know very well, you lucky thing.
You're spot on msolga, I wouldn't touch imported fish with the proverbial forty foot pole, no comparison with what we catch in the pristine waters of the Southern Ocean near Port Lincoln.
Yes. And often the source of the fish is not known to buyers, too.
I'd rather buy it from the "tried & trusted" outlets for these reasons.
You see why fish can get a bit pricey for the buyer, Dutchy?
