@hingehead,
On a personal note I've done Adelaide to Canberra (1160km) in 13 hours (1 roadside nap); Brisbane to Canberra (1200km) in 12 hours (no sleep) and Cairns to Canberra (2,5ookm) in 48 (some sleep on side of road).

Australian cricketer Usman Khawaja has vowed to fight a ruling from the International Cricket Council (ICC) that he can't wear shoes displaying apparent messages of support for Palestinian victims of the war in Gaza.

Khawaja wore shoes with the slogans "All lives are equal" and "Freedom is a human right" written on them in red, green and black ink during training sessions in Perth ahead of Thursday's first Test against Pakistan, prompting a ruling from the ICC he couldn't display the messages during the match.

The era of watching on in horror
By Dave Milner
December 21, 2023
A few weeks back, in an attempt to locate a source of stress and exhaustion rising in me like a metaphor I can’t be fucked conjuring up, my therapist asked me a handful of on-point questions.

“What have you been focussing on at work this year?”

Well, recently it’s mostly been: genocide, terrorism, kidnapping, ethnic cleansing, war, racism, systemic racism in settler colonies, sexual assault, billionaires subverting democracy, the climate crisis, the horrors of social media, the horrors of traditional media, Rupert Murdoch, the politicians I don’t like, that discombobulating time Pauline Hanson called me a racist on Twitter, and thousands upon thousand of murdered children.

“I see,” she said, clearly seeing. “And what measures do you have in place at work to deal with all that?”

I explained there was a sense of jocular toxic masculinity and a relatively lax drugs-at-work policy.

“You need to take a month off.”

I can see that, I said, also clearly seeing that.

The whole piece...

@hingehead,
The poker machine factoid was astounding. Does this area bring in gamblers from other countries?

@bobsal u1553115,
Poker machines aren't aimed at overseas users. For a long time they were only allowable in 'clubs' which in Australian context are effectively 'not for profit' social organisations with owned licenced premises (I'm nost sure there's an American equivalent).

The majority of clubs were/are sporting, community, worker or returned services clubs. On the back of poker machine revenue they have become behemoth organisations with huge facilities and a significant role in community investment - and a political player (mostly to protect their poker machine revenue).

Their justification for fleecing their members was their social investment. There is no doubt that the lowest income groups lose the most money in poker machines (proportionately and quantitatively).

In the mid 80s I worked at one Community Club. Had about 140 poker machines - the early shift would empty them in buckets. Literally 10 of thousands of dollars in a night. And the weren't the biggest club (but they were top 10).

Fairly recently (since the 1990's) pubs (bars) have been allowed to provide access as well. I'm guessing the govt passed the legislation because 'tax revenue'.

The amount gambled and lost per player is disturbing

@hingehead,
That's amazing. The government didn't take the poker industry seriously until it got huge. Really interesting story, there's got to be a book on it.
