I actually watched the Steve Irwin memorial service on tv today.

Corny, but I expected that. I still think his Mum let him have too much red cordial when he has a kid, and five minutes at a time was my limit, but I think he was for real with his conservation messages.

I ended up in tears. Nothing to do with Steve Irwin. It's that bloody John Williamson - as soon as he sings "Is it a cockatoo?" I'm gone. Crying or Very sad

A master of jingoism!

Sorry, Steve 41oo, I'm afraid I don't understand your comment.
I would be grateful if you would be kind enough to explain what you meant and then I can give you an appropriate answer.

Thank you.

AMERICAN producer Ben Silverman, who adapted The Office into an American sitcom, has his sights set on Fountain Lakes' foxy ladies, Kath and Kim.

Kath and Kim's executive producer, Rick McKenna, has told The Age that he has been in discussion with Silverman since March last year.

In a feature in The New York Times, Silverman has described Kath and Kim as "Roseanne meets Ab Fab". .....

....... An agreement is yet to be struck on a Kath and Kim adaptation. While McKenna imagines Gina Riley and Jane Turner would be keen to play the American characters, he says he cannot imagine they would be suitable for an American network. They can take comfort, however, from The Office's creator and star, Ricky Gervais, whose only complaint about the US version of his show was they chose "a David Brent with better teeth". .... <cont>

That'll show those fiendish NSW banana growers! Caught red-handed!
I think the writer had a bit of fun writing this story, though. Razz
(Incidentally, what's the going price for a kilo of bananas where you live? Last time I looked I think it was around $7 at my market. OK, an improverment on $17, but ..... still very much a luxury!Smile

Plot to skin banana-starved Victorians foiled
Bridie Smith
October 11, 2006/the AGE

A BUNCH of NSW banana growers has been caught trying to bend the rules to profit from Victoria's high prices.

But the plan to illegally sell bananas worth more than $100,000 in Melbourne's wholesale markets slipped up when an investigation began to bear fruit.

A joint operation by the NSW and Victorian departments of primary industries uncovered more that 1400 cartons of uncertified hard green bananas in the markets. .... <cont>

I actually bought two bananas two weeks ago. (The first since the prices took off.) I did get sugar bananas rather than the usual lady fingers, because they are smaller, sweeter and I was not going to pay the current $12 per kilo for hard, green bananas that, when you peel them, all have bruised 'shoulders'.

My sympathies for the banana growers waned when the prices shot up as high as they did. I appreciate the law of supply and demand, and I like to think there is some form of protection for the Aussie growers, but it's a two-way street -

If you want us to buy your product, don't be so BLATANT about ripping us off!

If I thought the money was going towards rebuilding the industry I would not mind so much but the people who have had bananas to sell don't need propping up.

And to try to circumvent the Victorian laws is the bitter end. Greedy little worms! Evil or Very Mad

Did you catch the brouhaha over Margaret Whitlam's comments about Janette Howard? Naturally, she is selling a book, but they were interesting comments.

http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,20867,20484437-601,00.html

I was working in the Parliamentary Triangle (old Parliament House/Foreign Affairs/Treasury with the famous rose garden in the centre) during the Whitlam era. Trips back and forth between the three buildings caused one to witness the goings-on that were going on among the blossoms.

I wonder if Marg has anything to say about Dr and Mrs Jim Cairns' public relationship. I can assure you, those of us who knew what was going on with Ms M. were so terribly embarrassed for poor Mrs Cairns. To see the doc and his assistant walking hand in hand while Mrs C trailed four or five paces behind, head hanging, was so sad. Pity Mrs W didn't speak out then. True he was never PM, but he was Deputy PM on occasion when Gough was off elsewhere.

A trip to the library is in order, I think.

What else do you know from your time at parliament house, lezzles? What's publishable, anyway.

That's a sad little story. I wouldn't have thought that Jim Cairns would be quite so insensitive, though .... he was obviously ridiculously besotted with Juni. Silly man. Poor Mrs Cairns! Sad

Do tell us what you think of Margaret's book, if you can get your hands on it.

Besotted is exactly the word.

Unfortunately, most of the really interesting stuff is unpublishable because the people are still alive. The fear of libel is not the problem - the possibility of hurting loved ones is. However, no doubt from time to time something will trigger a memory and I shall pass it on.

It's a cess-pit, that place!

I keep thinking about poor Mrs C. <sigh>
That was a very cruel way for a man of such lofty ideals to treat his life partner. <sigh>

That was exactly the point! No one gave a stuff whether he was bonking JM or not - the real scandal was the way they treated her! He lost the respect of most people there - if he could not be discreet about his indescretions, how could he hope to retain the respect and trust of his colleagues? He just went headlong into one disastrous thing after another, and she was just expected to shut up and accept it. I cannot recall whether she finally left him or whether he left her. I hope it was the former and she was able to regain some of her dignity. They did reconcile eventually though he never cut his ties with JM.

Sometimes I used to think she was such a marvelous woman for staying so loyal for so long and other times I thought she was a fool and should have spoken up, made a public issue of it and let him stew in his own juice.

I guess she was a generation too early.

Possibly. But maybe Jim could have been as principled in his personal life as in his political existence?
Rather disappointing, hey? Sad
