Teacher Arrested and Cuffed for speaking Out at Meeting

@Setanta,
The Chair must recognize a speaker - only at a certain time and the speaker can go on for only a certain length of time.

I attend all of our city's Council meetings and Planning Commission meetings. Sometimes I am amazed at outbursts and demands citizens make.

Like I said before, if she disagreed with the decision of the motion, she needed to get another plan of action. Screaming and yelling at a board is fruitless.

From the OP:

Quote:
After the vote, Hargrave — who was recognized by the board — told them, "How are you taking the raise when you are basically taking from the teachers and the employees under you?"
As people in the audience agreed with Hargrave, Fontana banged his gavel multiple times and ordered Hargrave to stop talking because the raise "wasn't on the agenda" — promoting several others in the meeting to disagree.
As Puyau began to directly address Hargrave's concerns, the city marshal officer asked her to leave.
Hargrave told BuzzFeed News that she thought the officer was "confused" and did not understand the protocol at board meetings, where members in the audience are allowed to comment if they are recognized by the board.
"It's something I have done before and never gotten escorted out, let alone arrested," she said.

My original take has not changed. They were out of order to so abuse the teacher.

@edgarblythe,
Agreed, Punkey has a track record of picking up the wrong end of the stick and running with it. Max knows full well what he's doing.

If she had been spouting Nazi slogans, you wouldn't be so sympathetic.

You took the subject matter of her rant and gave her an excuse.

@PUNKEY,
She was entitled to speak, she'd been recognised, and what she had to say was relevant and important.

Stop trying to change the subject. If she'd been spouting Nazi slogans it would not have been remotely relevant.

@izzythepush,
Why thank you Izzy! I enjoy getting people to think outside the box. In fact, there shouldn't be any box.

You never got over me correcting the spelling of your "margarita" pizza.

None of us were there, so we don't know how things escalated to the point of having an officer approach her to be quiet. If the Chair has to bang a gavel, then the meeting got out of control.

@PUNKEY,
I'd forgotten about that. I pay no attention to American spellings.

You're doing what a lot of your fellow Americans do when their backs are against the wall, change the subject and try to turn it into a US vs UK debate, which is pointless and quite childish.

Maxdonica and BillRM do it all the time, but it never works for them either.

If she had come in with an ak-47 or started screaming or even being rude or insulting, there might be a reason to make her leave or even arrest her. Since all she did was get recognized by the board and allowed to speak, then state her case, there is no logical cause to go after her that way. Unless of course we are now living as subjects of Nazi-ism.

This is really the issue here. Every thing turns into Nazis.

This is the selective outrage of the day. This is one of thousands of school board meetings most of which don't end up in an arrest. There are videos (pretty easy to find) of people being led out in handcuffs because they oppose the teaching of same sex marriages. You don't see these videos in the liberal political bubble.

Maybe this woman was unjustly treated. I still don't see how this portends our alleged slide into "Nazism" or why this is even a story. If you pick every scuffle on YouTube from the tens of thousands of random encounters every day you can tell any story.

Progressives are living on outrage. If you look for it on social media, you will probably find it.

The law:
"I've been practicing law for more years than I care to admit, and I have attended hundreds, if not thousands, of public meetings," Funderburk said. "I found no criminal activity, and I'm not going to prosecute somebody when I find no criminal activity."
He said that it appeared that the school board president, Anthony Fontana, had given Hargrave permission to speak and never told her to relinquish the floor.

The Louisiana Assn. of Educators, a teachers union, is working with Hargrave on possible legal action.
