Missing favorites after installing FireFox 1.0

Reply Thu 20 Jan, 2005 06:22 am
I downloaded firefox 1.0 last night. After setting it up, I went into my Internet Explorer to export my favorites so I could import them into Firefox, but they were all missing! Any ideas as to what could have happened and on any way to fix this problem (if it could be fixed) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Very odd. I have no idea how it happened but let's try to help you look for them (they may not be available anymore but give this a try):

First, go to (by copying and pasting in the Windows Explorer address bar, do not try to navigate to it):

C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Favorites

Replace "Owner" with your local username.

I looked at my favorites folder, and they're not in there. I ran a search, including hidden folders, for a couple of my favorites that I knew I had, and I couldn't find them that way either.
I have no idea what happened, but I'm getting the feeling that they're out and out gone. Thanks for the help though.

All I can say is that I downloaded Firefox last week and it prompted me to haul my favorites to the new browser...which I did.

The registry key (if you're running XP) for your Favorites folder should be

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ShellFolders

See what, if anything, is in the right hand pane at that key and post it here.

This is why I like to backup my IE favorites. Firefox doesn't have a native ability to export (import yes, not export) that I know of so I maintain my primary favorites index outside of firefox.

Well, phoenixdown, that looks pretty much as it should - no surprises, and the key for your Favorites folder is apparently intact. My only guess is that somehow they did get deleted. I assume you've looked in your Recycle Bin? - just tossin' out thoughts here. Is your Favorites folder totally empty, or does it contain subfolders?

I checked my recycle bin as soon as I noticed they were missing, and they weren't there. After I installed firefox, a set of favorites from firefox were in my favorites, but the favorites I had before I installed weren't. It doesn't matter anymore, I've replaced all the important ones allready.
Thanks to everyone for all the help!

Typo
Just so you know, in that list, Favorites was listed as "Favorits". That may have something to do with it.
