Novel Ideas - Let's brainstorm.

I have decided to write a novel - for the sake of enjoyment and practice.

However, I have a dilema... what am I to write about?

My ideas were
1) Philosophical - about the struggles and hardships of life and overcoming them
2) N/a
3) N/a
...

As the saying goes, "X>1 heads are better than 1"

Please give me your input. I am hungry for ideas. Idea

Smile

Rules for novice writers:

1, Write about what you know.

2. Write on paper, not in conversation (face to face or on the internet().

3, Writing is not a group activity.

You've indicated in other posts that you have trouble writing clear, gripping prose. My guess would be that your expository prose should be your first target. After all, you have to get into college before you can graduate with a degree in law.

Noddy, what do you mean by not writing in conversation?

I guess you have first to specify the points you are going to write about. For example, the theme of the novel or what you want to prove by the end of it! Then you can decide what kind of a novel it is going to be: comedy, tragedy, suspense, etc.

So what do u think, have you made up your mind about such stuff or not yet?

Joe--

In my youth I spent a lot of time with would-be novelists who talked on and on about their works "in progress" but put very few of these words down on paper.

Creating in prose, as in any other medium, means [/I]writing the story down

It's strange you say that.

I just (about an hour ago) finished reading 'The Name of the Rose' with it's Postcript in which Eco says that in order to write a novel one must first construct the world and then the novel writes itself. I think the approach you should take is whichever you feel fits you best.

Although I understand the way people talk about their works in progress in order to appear more interesting to other people and themselves.

Kyle, take Noddy's advice of writing expository prose.

JoeFX--

All my articulate life, I've wished that I knew a short cut to genius, fame and fortune.

I only have glimmerings--but I'm learning common sense.

I'd name it "Kiss on the Lips." No, not the ones down there, you dirty devil.

Here's an excerpt:

"George and Laura Bush is chilling out at the pool. Laura looks up at the pool boy. She see his face...nice. She see his bling...nice. She see his dong....very nice."

Then whoever reading the book holds the book down to her crotch and hit a button to make it vibrate.

(anyone know what that's from?)

Ah! common sense and street smarts... I find it so hard to acquire those.

Maybe because I keep thinking I must learn them some how.

Thanks,

But I was merely looking for ideas on what to write about.

I want to make a suspense story just I do not know what about.
or
A struggle through life (philosophical).

What do you think?

I repeat myself:

Write about what you know.

If you live a life of high adventure or spend your time thinking philosophically--go for it.

My plot is not Joe's plot is not your plot because my life is not Joe's life is not your life.
