A little NBA Love???(New Bird vs. Magic)

I never really see much NBA discussion going on, so I want to start this one.

If you were starting a team, right now, who would you pick to build around? Of course you have your obvious choices of Duncan, Garnett, and Shaq. But I think my choice would be one of the lesser thought of fellows. Amare Stoudemire? Tracy McGrady? Steve Francis? While all those guys are good choices, I still say no. I'm taking Lebron James, or Dirk Nowitzki. I mean, what these 2 guys are doing this year is amazing! When I watch Dirk lead a break and then pull up, and not even hit net on a 25 footer, I have to remind myself that this guy is 7 feet tall. He's Larry Bird II, without a doubt. In a few years he'll be averaging 25-11-5. My next choice would be Lebron. Dirk is LB II, Lebron is Magic Johnson II. I used to be down on his shooting, but after seeing him play several more times, I saw he's a pretty good shooter, and he'll only get better. But who needs shooting when you can jump 5 feet in the air and throw it down at will?

These 2 guys are amazing. Write it down, 2 years from now, Dirk and Lebron will be Larry Bird and Magic Johnson.

Edit: Dirk's line tonight:

28pts-3blks-3stls-4assts-11rebounds-12/12 on FTS

Great.

I like that you didn't use the big doofus, AKA Shaq. Good squad.

Nobody in the league can gaurd that big doofus. 3 championships in the last 6 years, what a doofus? Who had the other 2 of 3? Timmy Duncan.

My starting 5:
Shaq
Duncan
Dirk
James
Baron Davis, I guess, no great all around point gaurds.

These are always so difficult to call.

Let me just go with some lineups for the All-Star Game:

West Conference starters:

Nash
T-Mac
Nowitski (at the 3!)
Duncan
Yao

and KG, Marion, Amare, Gasol, Rashard, Melo, Peja, and Kobe -- assuming they are healthy -- and of those who are not, pick from maybe C-Webb, Bibby, Ray Allen, Elton Brand, Corey Maggette, Jason Richardson...

East:

The Answer
D-Wade
King James
J. O'Neal
The other O'Neal

Gotta kinda like the East's chances, especially with Big Ben, 'Sheed, Emeka, JKidd, Stephon, Paul Pierce, and Stevie Franchise coming off the bench...

i picked a fairly young squad, built to 3-peat... twice Cool
i need team players, not prima donnas...

shaq doesn't have too many more years left in those knees.
t-mac hasn't gone to the next level yet.
yao isn't consistent enough yet.
duncan was a tough cut, but he needs a half-court offense.
i thought about iverson -- all that banging and hitting the floor is gonna catch up with him soon.
kobe? too much baggage!

i got KG & lebron filling the lanes for nash...
KG & wallace under the glass = no layups...
wade creates shots and/or gets to the line...

So you pick KG over Duncan? Doesn't make sense.

they're very close, but KG's more athletic and he gets 3 more boards a game then TD...

He also can't lead a team. Evidence:

Duncan 2 rings, KG 1 first round play off advance.

KG for defense.

He still doesn't start on my team, though.

Reeg, you've never seen Duncan post up and go glass from 16 feet? He's the only guy in the league that does it. It's more rare than a hook shot.

Get the League Pass, my brotha, so you can watch the West Coast ball -- that is, if you can stay up late enough

Duncan is The Big Fundamental. KG is The Big Overrated.

if KG had a decent coach like greg pop, he'd have his bling.
(flip's facial ticks keep getting worse...)

besides, duncan's too slow for my up-tempo game plan...

i think february is when i get some free league pass on my cable system...

If you are going for a game plan, I can understand your pick. I thought you were picking the best at the position.

But do you think Duncan is the better player?

I have to admit bias- I've met Shaquille O'neal, and found him to be an arrogant, self-centered bully. So far, I haven't been able to balance out that knowledge by the fact that he can throw his weight around in the paint.
