What is true?

Let's say the universe is infinite. Also, let's suggest you will live forever. You set out on a space ship with the intention of visiting every planet in the universe. Because the universe is infinite, you will never visit every planet. But because you will live forever you would not be able to point to a planet and say you will never visit that one. You will visit every planet - that is true. You will not visit every planet - that is also true. Comments?

This was fun Smile

You will visit every planet- true if you stay true to your pledge. But your work will never be done.

You will not visit every planet- true if you realize the futility of your work and give it up. But you will have broken your pledge.

The hypothesis leads up to a question that has to be answered. There is no right or wrong answer. It is a crossroad in the existence of an entity who is growing up. A choice.

What I really think is that this problem is a result of a misguided conception of infinity and forever. But that does not matter to the point being made.

Also, no matter how far you've traveled you have not even begun.

If the number of planets is infinite, I will never visit every planet of that infinite universe. Even if I live forever. I cannot say that I will not visit the planet A or B, but I can say that I will never visit all planets, because the idea of "all planets" is a contradiction, since their number is infinite.

I think you want to present a paradoxal situation. But I disagree. It's true I cannot say I will never visit the planet A, or B, or C. But the contrary is not true. I will not visit every planet, even if I visit an infinite number of planets. THe problem in your statement is that you depart from an infinite situation to a finite one (every planet).

Ah but you WILL Val! Now we are dealing with the concept of the oneness of time and space.

You are forgetting that you have infinite time at your disposal val.

But you have a point in that you cannot say "all planets" after saying that the number is infinite.

It is impossible to complete this task simply because infinite means the oposite of finite- finito- finished.

You are right Bi-polar. If I had infinity to live, I would be most happy with the knowledge that I'd never run out of work.

But when it gets down to it infinity is not a very long time. It is merely the shift of time from future to past. The undefinable thing in between that we cannot put our finger on, because it didn't begin, and it does not end, it just moves on, changes.

Smoke clears nothing.

By the way, Bi-polar-bear, does your nick refer to the polar bears who are born as both genders due to environmental changes? Just curious.

You can say that you will never visit planet x because if there are an infinite amount of planets, you could keep going on without ever visiting planet x, regardless of the infinity of your life.

Not true Gos. At some point in the infinite future you will visit that planet.

If it takes you an infinite amount of time to get to infinite amount of planet, then you can not really reach it since infinity goes on forever and does not stop, thus there would be no point at which you will reach an infinite number of planet since "infinity" = no end.

if the universe is infinite does this meen that it is growing?

therefore it is growing at a certain rate.

if you travel faster the=an the speed at which it is growing it must be possible to visit every single planet at one given moment.
there can be a point when you have seen all the planets in the universe.

I don't think that's what was meant by infinity. Infinity never stops because it's going forever, thus since forever has no end, it's logical to see that there is no point at which the person would reach all the planets since there would be no end to his travel.
