Why is vitamin B17 illegal in America?

The FDA has banned vitamin B17. However, it occurs in certain foods such as almonds and cashews.

I have been able to buy bitter almonds on the net and have them sent to Texas.

That's easy enough to google. It seems like the USDA requires that all almonds sold in the US be pasteurized since a salmonella outbreak.

I emailed the suppliers at the place I have done business with in the past:

Ours are from a couple of small farms and are not pasteurized. Just shelled and bagged
