Latest victim of Homepage Hijacking!! Nothing seems to work

Reply Mon 10 Jan, 2005 01:47 am
ok, ok...so i'm sure you've heard it before...i opened my ie browser earlier and lo and behold my homepage has changed and i can't seem to fix it. also, when i go to some pages it changes from the page i'm on to another search engine (kita search or something), got a great bundle of new additions to my favorites list as well. to try and fix this i've run ad-aware, spybot s&d, trend pc-cillin, yahoo anti-spy, and spyware blaster (all of these are the most current version with no new updates) and i've had no luck cleaning up my system. i also took a recommendation and deleted all *.hta files as well. here's my hijackthis log if anyone can help.
thanks, chuck

newest update,
http://win-eto.com/hp.htm?id=9 is the homepage that opens everytime i open my browser, but the update i wanted to write about is that apparently my anti-virus software (pc-cillin 2000) wasnt fully updated like i thought. i checked it again for updates and it started to download the newest...after the download was complete the updates were installed and pc-cillin tried to open only to give me the error (unable to open pntmain.exe). so im trying to resolve this problem now, i downloaded the latest version of pc-cillin 2005 and when i installed that it made me uninstall pc-cillin 2000. pc-cillin 2005 wont currently install due to me not knowing the serial number of the deleted version. so i'm currently working with trend micro on resolving this matter.
thanks,
chuck

Hi chucklefukk and welcome to A2K

Dowload the following program
CWShredder
It should be the current version, but check for updates
Run Program cwshredder and have it fix anything it finds.
Make sure you click the "Fix" button

Restart your computer,
Next
Go Here BitDefender Scan Online
Run a scan with BitDefender , Be sure and Check Auto Clean. Make a note of anything it can't remove

Next
Go here Trend Micro - Free online virus Scan
Be sure and check Auto Clean before you do the scan. If it finds anything that it cannot clean have it delete it or make a note of the file location so you can delete it yourself.

Post back a fresh log when done with the above please

k, next step
ran cw shredder, nothing found, tried to run bitdefender and came up with the msg: Failed to load interface -- You must have administrative rights on this computer; you also must have the Internet Explorer security settings to the Medium level.

i am an administrator and my security settings are set to medium, should i just continue or should i adjust my settings even more?
thanks,
chuck

when i ran hijack this i fixed all the processes, it wouldnt let me fix the global.winlogin.exe, said i had to end the process in task manager, task manager wouldnt end it due to it being a critical process. also could not find the two files you wanted me to delete upon rebooting in safe mode (i viewed all hidden files and folders). upon reboot i ran hijack this and posted this log. i opened ie and my homepage is now blank instead of having that pesky search engine as my homepage.
thanks, chuck

Hi Chuck
Reboot to safe mode and open HJT again have it fix

O4 - Global Startup: winlogin.exe
Then while still in safe mode search for and delete

winlogin.exe

Restart your computer and post back a fresh log,

Next right click on Internet Explorer, Click properties and change it back to your home page.

rebooted in safe mode, ran hijackthis, tried to fix 'global startup: winlogin.exe" wouldn't let me fix it due to it being currently in use, tried to end the process using task manager and it wouldn't let me end it due to it being a 'critical process'. here's the log that i ran. any ideas will be greatly appreciated.
thanks, chuck

Lets give this a run Chuck

Download the WinloginRemove.zip file and save it to your hard drive (you may want to right click and use Save Target As). Extract WinloginRemove.exe from the ZIP and run it. There is no installer or uninstaller. Simply delete the WinloginRemove.exe file to uninstall.

Post back a fresh log when done please

Hmm this is giving us a bit of a run,

Reboot to safe mode ( By tapping the F8 key on start up)

Delete the entire contents of the below Temp folders, but not the TEMP folder itself.

Remove all the files and sub-folders from the below TEMP Folders:

C:\Documents and Settings\ \Local Settings\Temp
C:\temp
C:\windows\temp

The TIF ( Temporary Internet Files) can also be emptied via:
Internet Explorer--Tools--Internet Options--General tab--"Delete Files",
Also tick the "delete all offline content" box .

Empty your Recycle Bin

Next while still in safe mode,
Check and see if it is still running under process manager and end it,

Next open HJT again and fix it
Then search for it and see if you can delete it then

Let me know how you make out

here's the logfile from the last attempt:
here's exactly what i did:
i rebooted in safe mode, i deleted all files and subfolders from c:\windows\temp, i don't have a c:\temp folder, i also don't have a c:\documents and settings\\local settings\temp folder; therefore i deleted files and subfolders from c:\documents and settings\administrator\local settings\temp, c:\documents and settings\guest\local settings\temp, and also c:\documents and settings\owner\local settings\temp, and c:\documents and settings\c\local settings\temp (that's my logon) i also deleted all the files under each of those categories in the temporary internet folders. i then emptied my recycle bin, checked that winlogin.exe was running (which it was), task manager still wouldnt let me end the process, ran hjt and it wouldn't fix the file due to it being in use. upon searching for the file, it shows up in 7 places, all under c:\hijackthis\backups\*backupfiles*. it seems that my computer is running normal again, what is the importance of this file? i assume that it does/will disrupt something.
thanks,
chuck

OK Chuck checked it out with a few people and the fix seems to be the following,

Download Pocket Killbox from. Here

Unzip the file to your desktop.
Open TheKillbox.

Select the Delete on reboot option.

In the 'Full Path of File to Delete' box, copy and paste the following, clicking the 'Delete File' button (red circle with a white X) after pasting:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\winlogin.exe

It will prompt you to reboot, press the NO button. Instead, copy and paste the following and click the 'Delete File' button again:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\W8C6S4~1.DLL

Then repeat for this one

gfib98n72tuhtg1.dll

When it prompts for a reboot, do so

Next Open HJT and fix the below

O4 - Global Startup: winlogin.exe

Reboot again
Post back a fresh log when done please
