computer won't shut down

Reply Thu 6 Jan, 2005 10:12 am
This happened a year or so ago, but somehow, got itself resolved. This time, it's a total mess, and unfortunately I can't remember what happened or what I did to fix the problem.

No matter how often I go to Start>Turn off computer I get to the popup that asks Standby, Shut down or Restart. I click on Shut down, get the little hourglass, it flickers, goes away, and nothing more happens. At first this happened only a couple of times, maybe three, then shut down proceeded properly. But over the last few weeks it has become completely impossible to shut down via the Start menu. I have to switch off manually. Sad

I have tried System Restore, but no matter where I set it, it doesn't help.

I understand that there are two schools of opinion, BTW, on shutting down by switching off manually - it's not ok, it is ok. Confused

So I have two (related) questions: 1) can anyone guide me to fixing this problem (simplest, least technical language, please); and 2) is it ok to shut down by simply switching off manually?

computer won't shut down
Don - Thanks for the instructions. I've followed them as far as going into Safe Mode. I can get into Safe Mode, but can't get beyond a long list of items on Partition 1. There's no way to move from that list, except manually shutting down and restarting from scratch.

I know I can access the C:\temp files and the C:\windows\temp files, but I can't get at the C:\Documents and Settings\Local Settings\Temp. I get a message that Windows can't access C:\Documents.

Is there any other way to get at this folder?

computer won't shut down
Don - No, not yet. I'm still working on the cleaning steps as given in your Reference Post.

Can I continue with the steps even if I can't access C:\Documents and Setting\ \Local Settings\Temp to delete its contents?

Bit Defender refuses to do the scan - says I need administrative permission and Medium IE security setting. I AM the administrator, inasmuch as I am the owner and sole user of my computer and am not connected with any network; the computer is kept at Medium security setting!

Should I skip BitDefender and go on to Trend Micro?

Seems pretty clean,

Please restart HJT put a check next to the following, close all open windows and click "Fix Checked"
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://search.hpwis.com/
If this is your homepage leave it, other wise have HJT fix it,

O4 - Startup: PowerReg SchedulerV2.exe
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)

Next reboot to safe mode ( By tapping the F8 key on start up) Make sure you can view all Hidden Files/Folders search for and delete the above files highlighted in BOLD
PowerReg SchedulerV2.exe
Restart your computer, Post back a fresh log please

After running Ad-aware and spybot has the computer seemed to running a bit faster ?

Good idea to fix those two. However, shutdown problems usually are due to somethin' other than yuckware. Corrupt or outdated drivers (and a new Service Pack can outdate a driver) lead the list, particularly display and other multimedia drivers, but USB, APCI, peripherals, and assorted 3rd Party apps - just about anything other than the color of your shirt - all can play a part . Give this a look: AUMHA: Windows XP Shutdown Troubleshooter
