Shards of Early Morning Glass

3 A.M.
the rain lies slick
on black asphalt
tossed by radials
in a hurry to get home
or hook up.

Trenchcoat mad, I haunt
the all-night diners,
eyeing broken-down
waitresses,
whatever happened
to baby jane?

The patrons move slowly
each action deliberate,
careful,
cautious,
on the watch
for the dragons that chase them.

The bacon is atrocious,
the eggs not quite right.
The toast is fine,
so we break bread.

Over coffee,
we watch the sun rise,
mocked by dark clouds,
and Kafka's shadows.

None really, unless you consider he spent far too much time awake at night, pondering life as a cockroach. Smile The connection is more between the dark clouds, and the German expressionist film of the novel, with it's huge creepy shadows.

like it... like a 70's indie film, i don't know why but the imagery of lonely people, searching out company at 3 am in diners makes me think of midnight cowboy and taxi driver; there's a bit of bickle in this one and you know how i feel about that paticualr loner.

Hmph.

There is[/b] more of a connection though, because I've seen it brought up many times in other places....Kafka's Coffee, Kafka's Koffee...

You describe the rain as tossed by radials. It's such a vivid description that I feel you tighten your trenchcoat as you peer into the diners.

We all have dragons and they're never more ferocious than at 3 am.

Strong words used wisely.

I know you have probably heard this before but the images i got in my head when reading this were so vivid...your ability to create not only words for someone to read but pictures at the same time...awesome
