computer rebooting unexpectedly, please help

Reply Mon 3 Jan, 2005 01:57 am
My computer is unexpectedly shutting down or rebooting itself. I am running Windows XP, home edition. My virus-protection program--Grisoft's AVG 7.0 freeware is not finding anything when I run it.

I am posting here with what I hope is a useful description of the problem before taking the actions suggested in the yuckware thread in case the actions suggested there would not likely be helpful in my particular case.

The problem started a couple of weeks ago. I was on-line at yahoo games. Someone (or someone's bot) was flooding the "chat" area with racist and anti-semitic jargon and I attempted to "clean" the chat area by entering a bunch of periods. The malefactor seemed to pause and, then, all-of-a-sudden, I could not write in the chat area. Then my computer began to crash. It also began to say it had a floppy disk drive which fails at start-up every time (because there is no floppy disk drive in my computer at the moment.) This lasted for a day, but after that it seemed to go away so I stopped trying to figure out what the problem was.

However, the floppy disk drive error never went away.

The computer started acting up again in the last two days. A couple of times the system appeared to mention in its report prior to shutting down called "DELIVER_IRAQ_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL" ... however, the computer restarts long before I can read the report.

Upon restarting it will often reboot right away again and several times the system has checked the harddrive for consistency. Quite a few entries had to be truncated including the first line of Bootex.log and a bunch of prefetch files.

There was one serious system error found that began with "Bca_ " but, I didn't have time to read/write down the report prior to the computer rebooting/crashing again.

I have restarted in last known safe configuration a number of times, but that does not seem to produce any change for the better.

I used the search function to try and find any file in the computer with "deliver iraq" in it ... including hidden files ... but found nothing.

Has anyone heard of a virus/yuckware thing called "deliver_iraq_not_less_or_equal"?
Should I begin by the tasks described in the yuckware thread or is there something else I ought to do at this stage?
Is there something in particularly I ought to look for to clear this up?

Thank you for your welcome & help, Don77.

I followed the instructions and have a highjack log to post, but I think I should mention that doing all the updates for Windows XP included installing XP Service Pack 2, which by itself created a new restore point. I just let this be as I was not sure how to deal with that.

Here is the highjack log:

In case it helps, I also managed to write down the report for one of the serious system errors that my computer shut down for. (For some reason my computer didn't quickly crash thereafter, so I had the time. This system error was discovered prior to me putting in the XP Service Pack 2.)

Dunno if you're readin' that error message right. Its awful similar to one that relates to a memory problem - could be either RAM or virtual memory. Read DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

Your log looks fine, I believe Timber is pointing you in the right direction, The error messages you are getting appear to be pointing to memory issues,

Let us know how you make out

Thank you, timberlandko ... yes, that would make more sense. I took a look at the page you linked and it seems to identify a Logitech mouse driver as the potential problem. Since I don't have a logitech mouse, that seemed to be a wash.

I looked up the "Product: 768_1" line on the website you linked--since that line has come up more than once now in the error reports--and found that at least in one instance that referred to a driver incompatibility issue. That suggested that I go through the device manager to make sure that all drivers were compatible with XP ... 5.1.2600 or later.

I did so, but in an incredible act of idiocy, I just uninstalled the driver for my hard drive--thinking it was the driver for my nonexistent floppy drive. It does not want to let me reverse this decision, so as soon as my computer restarts I imagine it will not do much.

How's that for a Techno-Darwin award???? Embarrassed Confused Sad Crying or Very sad

A corrupt driver certainly can trigger that error message just as well as can faulty memory. More or less what it amounts to is the 'puter is tellin' you something it expected to find, and thinks is critically important, isn't where its lookin' for it.

Your machine oughtta detect the orphaned hard drive and install its driver - or at least a functional generic Windows driver - on rebooot. If not, you might wanna try rebooting from your Windows install disk if you have one - you might have to reconfigure your BIOS boot order to do that (typically accessed by holding down F2 during reboot) - and another work-around might be to boot from the six-floppy Win XP Emergency Boot set, which can be downloaded from Microsoft's Win XP website, or which can be created on any other machine running XP. It doesn't have to go on floppies, it can be created on any nedia from which you can configure your machine to boot.

Last but desperately least desireable would be to use the manufacturor's/vendor's provided Restore disk if you have one, or to format and reinstall Windows.

Well, I'm up & ... staggering again.

I'm trying to figure whether there are a whole slew of problems or if there could possibly be one discrete cause for all the problems my computer is having.

Why, for example, would my computer insist on it having a floppy drive in hardware when no floppy drive is connected to the computer? When I uninstall the driver, the computer merely finds the new hardware the next time the computer boots up.

1) The computer often gives me what I believe are called "stop errors". Irql_Not_Less_Or_Equal and Bad_Pool_Header are two that have lasted on the screen long enough for me to read.

2) While the computer is booting up ... before it even begins to boot Windows ... it will sometimes freeze.

3) While the computer is running ... even if I am doing nothing ... it will often freeze.

4) I am also getting system recovered from serious error messages--one listed in earlier post; here's another:

BCCode: 23
BCP 1: 000E0100
BCP 2: EB408950
BCP 3: EB40864C
BCP 4: 804F6F00
OSVer: 5_1_2600
SP: 2_0
Product: 768_1

These freezes will not allow me to just turn off the computer; I have to force it via keeping the power button pushed down for 10 seconds.

I have tried updating all the device drivers ... apparently XP and especially XP's Service Pack 2 have major problems with "sloppily written drivers". (I'm suspecting that XP and SP2 are therefore "sloppily written" ... cause, I suppose, I'm annoyed.) Some had updates, others didn't.

In case my memory stats would be useful: I have a reasonable amount of RAM .... 480 MB ... & a 20 GB HD, 2/3s full.

Any ideas on how to proceed?

Thanks again for all the help you folks have given me so far--it is sincerely appreciated.

Sounds more and more like a hardware issue. Have you run a bootlog and checked through event viewer? You might find it useful to read through Microsoft Windows XP Resource Kit: System Troubleshooting

Well, I installed a new harddrive & re-set the RAM cards & things seem to be OK so far.

Thanks for all your help, everyone. It's appreciated.

Interesting thing I learned on the offchance it's news to anyone -- when your computer is having trouble at start-up & beeps oddly, the kind of beep will tell you what the problem potentially is. Long single beeps denote memory problems for computers running Award BIOS.
