With God on our side:

Oh my name it is nothin'
My age it means less
The country I come from
Is called the Midwest
I's taught and brought up there
The laws to abide
And that land that I live in
Has God on its side.

Oh the history books tell it
They tell it so well
The cavalries charged
The Indians fell
The cavalries charged
The Indians died
Oh the country was young
With God on its side.

Oh the Spanish-American
War had its day
And the Civil War too
Was soon laid away
And the names of the heroes
I's made to memorize
With guns in their hands
And God on their side.

Oh the First World War, boys
It closed out its fate
The reason for fighting
I never got straight
But I learned to accept it
Accept it with pride
For you don't count the dead
When God's on your side.

When the Second World War
Came to an end
We forgave the Germans
And we were friends
Though they murdered six million
In the ovens they fried
The Germans now too
Have God on their side.

I've learned to hate Russians
All through my whole life
If another war starts
It's them we must fight
To hate them and fear them
To run and to hide
And accept it all bravely
With God on my side.

But now we got weapons
Of the chemical dust
If fire them we're forced to
Then fire them we must
One push of the button
And a shot the world wide
And you never ask questions
When God's on your side.

In a many dark hour
I've been thinkin' about this
That Jesus Christ
Was betrayed by a kiss
But I can't think for you
You'll have to decide
Whether Judas Iscariot
Had God on his side.

So now as I'm leavin'
I'm weary as Hell
The confusion I'm feelin'
Ain't no tongue can tell
The words fill my head
And fall to the floor
If God's on our side
He'll stop the next war.

- Bob Dylan, from a long, long time ago. (I reckon he should have added quite a few new verses by now!)

* For non-Oz folk: the short fellow in the rear of the tank is John Howard, PM of Australia ... George Bush's biggest & most loyal fan, who never questions the wisdom on anything that comes from his hero's mouth. Lucky us!

I feel myself a pig all pent-up: I cannot find anything to contribute to this great thread! Sad

Okay, I will do my duty of reading it.

If I was asked to vote for my favourite thread anywhere on A2K it would be this one. You are doing great things here - keep it up!
I think it's a very important collection.

By the way
Looking through the thread - this cartoon stands out a mile for me:

http://www.theage.com.au/ffximage/2006/07/30/wbTOONpetty_gallery__470x345,0.jpg

One of the most terrible aspects of war is the long lasting trauma of children. The world would do itself a favour if it stopped to look at these children- the worlds future - and what we are doing to them and the generation that follows them.
Nothing is more humbling to many a soldier than to see a child or a group of children trying to find way to still be children in a war zone.
A little girl explaining to her favourite toy the distruction of her home or a little boy in a football shirt kicking a can along a bloody street with the grace and focus of pele...

The above cartoon you posted, symbolises the deep desire in us all to be free to live our lives in peace and to have times when we are able to relax and kick a ball about without the fear of bombs or military strikes.

I wanted you to know that the above cartoon affected me (and others who I pointed it out to) very deeply.
You have a bit of a fan club this end.
And we all take our hats off to you.

Endy

Damn! I was hoping that those words would would elicit an absolute eruption of cartoon posting to A2K from all over the planet! (Wouldn't that be great?) Instead I've received kind & supportive words from generous folk. Thank you, that's really nice of you. And good to know that there are a few souls watching this thread! (sometimes I've wondered.)Very Happy
But I would love, love, love for this thread to receive posts from all over the globe! As the events happen! That would be just wonderful!
