There is another way to solve this problem:

If she worked 14 days, that is 28 shifts. The problem also states that she did not work for 32 shifts. If you divide everything by two (to turn shifts into days) you get this: 14 days worked 16 days not worked. Add those up, and you get 30 days total.

I took it to mean that she worked at some point during 14 days, either in the morning or evening, but not both. Blah - was very slow in figuring this one out, and wasn't around when it was first posted anyway.

That's what I thought at first, too. I'm not sure about that. But I figured out a different method of solving it by using the amount of shifts possible while she was there along with the number of shifts she did and didn't work. And I got the same answer as blue. But I see how yours works out. It just depends on how TNT meant for us to interpret the information.

---

um... please explain the steps you did.

@christkid,
I think either answer *could* be right. It just depends on how TNT meant it.

DayWork + 2 days=NightWork

We can say that:
Daywork=8 days NightWork=6 days (since DayWork + NightWork=14 days)

---

Blue's work!!! Who sees the flaw here? Blue said that 8 +2 = 6

@christkid,
As I said before, it all depends on what TNT wanted us to interpret the situation. It is possible that they said 14 days as what it technically is. But it could also be that they implied a total of 14 days to be 14 shifts, either morning or evening. That's what it ultimately depends upon.

@Firestar624,
We've all already submitted, I think, christkid. So really theres no point in arguing whether we are right or wrong. If you feel that strongly that your calculation is correct, submit it and we will see who got the correct answer next week. Btw, I got the same answer as Blue too and I used a completely low-tech grid method to solve. lol

hmm... yes. So does 14 days mean 14 "work-days" or 14 days of work.

yeah, it all matters how you interpret "She worked a total of 14 days." I feel TnT would have said 14 shifts if they meant she worked 14 times...

@christkid,
I think 14 days means 14 days that they showed up to work 1 shift. But that's my opinion. I was questioning that sentence too. It seems kinda vague to me.

@K311Y,
But they didnt put the word "shift" into the puzzle at all. Even when they said how many mornings/evenings she did not work. I agree that the sentence is open to interpretation.

This isn't the first time TnT has messed up a LC with bad wording :K And I admit, I have misinterpreted LCs before :p

@K311Y,
yeah u can pm on here. And christkid this is how I solve it:

If you take 14 days to mean 14 shifts either morning or evening, then M+E=14. It states that she didn't work 15 mornings and 17 evenings, 15+17=32 shifts not worked. Then, you add the amount of worked shifts with with unworked shifts, which would be 15+M+E+17. Since M+E=14, the overall total of shifts would be 46. Since a day has 2 shifts, you divide that in half to get 23.

I also made a chart since it's easier for me to visualize the situation. I put down 23 days and added in shifts not worked and worked. It all fit perfectly. There were 14 shifts done overall, 15 morning shifts not worked, and 17 evening shifts not worked. But I see how your way could work too.

@Firestar624,
I have to visualize. I was always that kid in school that drew all the story problems out. lol I tend toward thinking with the right side of my brain.

@blue bp17,
that totally makes more sense than what I was trying to figure in my head Surprised I tried to do 1 possible equation then I rearranged the variables and went with one that seemed right to me but I'm propably wrong Sad oh well Smile
