You know they can freeze you for that, right? Just follow the instructions in this link. If you're having problems in the temple itself, you're simply going to have to map the whole thing out--there's no way around it. I've already had to do it twice, and it's not fun, but it's easier than wandering around mindlessly.

New riddle:

Just suppose, for the sake of argument, that you have a large block of stone. While staring at this block of stone, it dawns on you that perhaps you should carve it into something. Luckily, you have a hammer and chisel handy.

But it's no ordinary hammer and chisel. Somehow, no matter how hard you hit the chisel, exactly one-half of one percent of the block chips off.

How many times do you have to hit the chisel before the block is less than half of its original size?

But... if you chip 0.5 % of the block off and there is 99.5 % left... so if I hit it with hammer again, 0.5 % of rest of the block comes off? The task is phrased a bit bad... Because if 0.5% of the original size came off every time you hit the block, it would take 101 hits. But I do think the first solution is correct because it HAS to be tricky Razz But they just phrased the task bad...

I agree with the answer 139 times, I used a spreadsheet and multiplied 100*.005 and then subtracted from 100 to give 99.5, then multiplying that by .005 and kept doing that until it was below 50. I tried with a different variety of number and came up with 139 times each time.

I didn't use a spreadsheet and used good old fashioned "lets do it the long way"... I came up with 169.

I started at 100 and got myself into a rhythm with the calculator....

100-0.5% * -.5% * -.5% * and so on... the -.5% I did with a calculator with my right hand.

the star denotes me with my left hand typing a key in notepad with my left... i got into the 4 calculator taps then on 5 I hit a key... Every now and then I noted where I was up to so that if i DID make a typing error on the calculator (i hate those things, lol) then i would be able to go back to my last KNOWN point and try agin.

I added up all the keystrokes (I pressed "1" each time as soon as I hit the % button on the calculator) and then checked it a few more times (although mental arithmetic has always been easy for me... it's the dexterity and keying accuracy that would let me down on something like this) ......

....... and submitted 169.

Its a little alarming that some have gotten 139 as i know I cannot have hit the 1 a whole 30 times more than I did... however, OK maybe I went wrong somewhere in my "recording" efforts....

hmmm.... if someone else gets the same result as me i'll feel a little better Razz

Since, at each step, you lose 0.005 of the starting amount, you are therefore left with 0.995 of that starting amount.

That is, at first you have 100%, or "1", of the block. After one tap, you have 0.995(1) = 0.995 of the block. After two taps, you have 0.995(0.995) = 0.995^2 of the block. After three taps, you have 0.995(0.995^2) = 0.995^3 of the block.

. . . . .n = 0: 0.995^0 = 1
. . . . .n = 1: 0.995^1
. . . . .n = 2: 0.995^2
. . . . .n = 3: 0.995^3
. . . . ....
. . . . .n = k: 0.995^k

We want to get down below 0.5 of the block. Thus, we need to find "k" such that:

. . . . .0.995^k < 0.5

We will instead work with the (mathematically) simpler exercise:

. . . . .0.995^k = 0.5

Taking logs of both sides, we get:

. . . . .. . . . .k = ln(0.5) รท ln(0.995)

...or about k = 138.28257.... Since this will create 0.995^k equal to 0.5 (where we actually want 0.995^k less than 0.5), and since k must be a whole number, then it must be that k = 139 taps, at which point 0.49820516..., or about 49.8%, of the block remains.

Eliz.
