Most of all budgies diet info! Budgies can be picky about their food and how they like it. eg. carrot grated or hole. I have 4 budgies, they are all un-tame and if offered a whole carrot it scars them into thinking its a finger.
You must always have budgie seed and water in their cage/aviary, it should be emptied, refilled and cleaned daily.
SAFE Fruit and Veg for budgies:
Apples (NO SEEDS), Artichoke, Broccoli, Brussels sprouts, Carrot, Celery, Corn, Cucumber, Egg plant, Endive, Fennel, Green or Red pepper, Iceburg lettuce, Spinach, Parsley, Romaine Lettuce, Zucchini.
UN-SAFE food:
Chocolate, alcohol, and more.
Just for those who are breeding budgies:
Once a week (or 2-3 times weekly for molting or nesting birds), feed this EGG FOOD RECIPE:
1.Wash an organic egg.
2.Drop the entire egg into a food processor or blender. The shell is a good source of calcium.
3.Whirl it all up to mince the shell into the egg.
4.Cook thoroughly. DO NOT USE TEFLON OR NON-STICK COOKWARE as the fumes are toxic to birds!
5.It’s fine to use a little vegetable oil in your skillet to prevent sticking.
6.Mix in finely diced vegetables and/or herbs and diced whole grain bread cubes.
7.Serve lukewarm. Remove remains from dish within 1-2 hours to prevent spoilage.
8.Feed egg food once a week (more often if molting or raising babies).
Here is some Info on their diet.
40% Canary - (Phalaris Canariensis) as pictured here, not to be confused with the seed mix sold to feed canaries.
50% Millet – (Setaria Italica) made up of a mixture of White, Panicum, Yellow and Japanese millets.
10% Oats – I prefer whole oats to groats or hulled oats, which have had the outer hull removed.
